LA Times Staff Los Angeles Times A revelation in photo drama from the standpoint of art and beauty, as well as dramatic force. Jun 4, 2021 Full Review Variety Staff Variety In no other film has the immense sweep of the old Athenian playgrounds been so impressively conveyed. You don't see merely a corner of what might be an arena. You see it all. Jun 4, 2021 Full Review SMH Staff Sydney Morning Herald The scenic interest is well sustained, and the amphitheatre assembly, with the subsequent earthquake spectacle, represent a triumph in construction. Jun 4, 2021 Full Review Harry Ennis New York Clipper To use the rather trite phrase, "awe inspiring" in relation to this is possibly a poor way of describing the eruption of Vesuvius and the destruction of Pompeii, for it reaches the superlative in motion picture production, and has never seen equaled, Jun 4, 2021 Full Review C.J. Ver Halen Motion Picture News We went to criticise, but our pencil lay idle and forgotten in the wonder of the unwinding scenes before us. It is truly a masterly production, done by a big mind on a massive scale. It is a photoplay marvel we wish the whole world could see. Jun 4, 2021 Full Review Motography Staff Motography There are five great leading roles in The Last Days of Pompeii production and all are enacted by accomplished and talented players, but Signora Fernanda Negri-Pouget... stands out vividly from among the thousands appearing in the six reel spectacle. david f This silent movie based on a turgid historical romance novel from the 1800s suffers from many of the cliches of the silent era-the pure heroes and mustache twirling villains, for example. Interesting to see the early film industry embrace classical themes, though, as they would become such a permanent staple. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Awful characterizations, awful storytelling, a chaste/dull romance between chaste/dull aristocrats, no nudity despite scenes which call for it, a villainous foreign priest (the only religion in this Pompeii is Egyptian!), a kind of Victorian bourgeois Pompeii. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Unfortunately while some visual effects were impressive for a 1913 movie, the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius was only a brief conclusion to some melodramatic love triangles. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member not bad for its time Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member I was amazed at the short length of this film at first, but then, when you see it, it is basically a tragedy that had all the superfluous parts stripped and instead redone with only the most strongest theme, that of love and its infinite sadness. The epic is a good way of representing this, and watching it like this was a particular experience for me if you might say so. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member An early experimental film which broadened the mind of many other directors, using large scale. Many famous epic films came soon after this one. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Read all reviews
