Jane Goodale (Ashley Judd) has everything going for her. She's a producer on a popular daytime talk show, and is in a hot romance with the show's dashing executive producer Ray (Greg Kinnear). But when the relationship goes terribly awry, Jane begins an extensive study of the male animal, including her womanizing roommate Eddie (Hugh Jackman). Jane puts her studies and romantic misadventure to use as a pseudonymous sex columnist -- and becomes a sensation.

Critics Consensus

A light and predictable, if somewhat shallow, romantic comedy that's easy to sit through because of the charming leads.

Joe Morgenstern Wall Street Journal Another dim adaptation of a bright comic novel. Jul 15, 2023 Full Review Todd McCarthy Variety Inevitability of the plotting and lack of modulated rhythm make the 97-minute running time feel longer than it is. Rated: 3/5 Dec 28, 2010 Full Review Barbara Vancheri Pittsburgh Post-Gazette To paraphrase Jane, Someone Like You wants to be the movie version of New Cow, but it's really Old Cow. Or mad cow. Or fractured fairy tale. Rated: 2/4 Oct 31, 2018 Full Review Hollywood.com Staff Hollywood.com Someone Like You clearly tries to go beyond the typical romantic comedy but its failure to do so is all the more painful to watch. Oct 31, 2018 Full Review Matthew Turner ViewLondon In general then, this is a standard rom-com with a decent helping of funny lines, some great supporting performances and two attractive leading characters that you genuinely care about. Piero P Very nice comedy, amazing cast, with an unusual Jackman. Just somewhat hasty, because there is no glimpse of Jane's involvement that seems, instead, almost unexpected. Perhaps it was necessary to dwell on this. On the contrary, from small cues it is understandable the increasing emotional involvement of Eddie Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/06/23 Full Review Barbara P Light and pleasant comedy, with excellent cast performances. But, as you realize Eddie's growing interest in Jane, Jane's involvement seems unexpected, and this makes the movie lose depth a little, in a way. The rythm sounds good, so the soundtarcks. The ending is predictable? yes, but it depends on the novel, not the movie neither the screenplay. If I think of "Bridget Jones' Diary", this film lacks a bit of atmosphere in the final but, overall, it is believable. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/05/23 Full Review Steve D Lightweight and the characters aren't interesting enough to care. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member Saw this listed with a different title of "Animal Attraction". Did not like this, maybe I was not in the right mood but… it just did not feel like a romance film that I wanted it to feel? Maybe it's just me but it did not feel to me that there was much of… a love story/ to see the development of feelings between the main couple. I enjoyed that it was a bit nostalgic, to see the actors that I was used to seeing back in early 2000s, to the fashion and hairstyles. The acting was not bad but the story line though, eeeh Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member l enjoyed this more then most modern rom-coms we get now a days. It was funny and had a nice nostalgic appeal to it. the movie, from my opinion, is worth a watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member While it falls into many of the cliched rom-com tropes, its a fun, cute film with a great, if underutilized cast. Pre-Wolverine Hugh Jackman is the best thing about the film, Greg Kinnear gives a solid performance, and Ashley Judd is a likable though high strung lead. Added bonus of a sassy Merissa Tomei as the man-eating best friend. Good chemistry all around. If you're a fan of 90's and early 00's rom-coms, it's an enjoyable movie.
