Tom P Such a good film! Great story, action, the cinematography, and story telling make this a really fun movie to watch. Very underrated. the fight scenes has such unique elements to it, the way Jack's character can so fluidly stay ahead of them the entire film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/04/24 Full Review DanTheMan 2 Time and Tide is Tsui Hark's Genesis, his attempt to start again, a rebirth. Made after his failure to break into the American market with his Van Damme duology, Time and Tide is a question of trust, renewal and the ebb and flow of time that lead both its characters and the narrative, a very confusing narrative but a narrative nonetheless. The film's appeal lies in its contemporaneousness, of its time yet still ringing true today, not seeming outdated in the slightest with Hark's style is all over the movie and yet not at all. There are his usual tried and tested techniques but at the same time something totally different; that alone makes his movies oh-so utterly fascinating, evocative of older wuxia flicks. While it might seem generic on the surface, Time and Tide is a fabulous take on an action noir thriller with a new wave twist. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member One incredibly crafted Hong Kong action movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member I love this movie! I like the main lead male and the story is so heart-warming and its action packed WOOHOO! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review dave j Friday, January 25, 2013 (2001) Time And Tide (In Chinese with English subtitles) ACTION The plot is complicated but there is one and if there's one thing I realized after reading a negative review from Leonard Maltin and a positve review from Roger Ebert is that the difference between watching any foreign drama film like "A Seperation" and an action foreign film such as "Time and Tide" is that for any drama/ political film, one have to pay attention to the storyline or plot but when it comes to an 'action' subtitled film would also have to adapt to paying attention to the action as well because I had to watch this film twice literally- once for the plotline which is kind of a backdrop and then to the action sequences which happends so fast that it's hard to enjoy this film on a single viewing because it needs to be seen again. Some of the the action scenes has never been seen nor done before with a little help of some CGI for the explosions and gun barrel scenes just because it's cheaper. The star of this film is Nicholas Tse as Tyler who as a result of a one night stand with a young female off duty police officer while working at a bar, felt obligated to help her financially once finding out that one night stand also impregnanted her as well who decides to leave his old job and work for a job that can provide better wages. He does this by working as a bodygaurd for his Uncle Ji(Hong Kong veteran Anthony Wong). She refuses his financial help since she's really a lesbian who didn't know that one night stand wouldn't lead to anything as a result of being drunk but he's persistent. While this was happening, a group of experienced mercenaries working for themselves are killing security gaurds to steal a suitcase of money and leaving no one alive. And on one of Tylers bodygaurd gigs was a wealthy businessman who along with working with other bodygaurds as well, are then being informed that one of the workers of this restaurant happens to be a hired assassin in disguised as a waiter to take this businessman out. And as a result of a tip from an unknown guest named Jack(Wu Bai) since he's with one of the businessman's daughters, Tyler was able to intercept this assassination attempt, only that after the scuffle his boss/ Uncle Ji doesn't believe him. But what it did do was strike up a friendship with the person who informed him about it in the first place and they build a rapport with one another. As the film progresses, Jack's really an ex- mercenary who wants out since he wants to raise a family but because of some history with the others who seem to be holding a pact, refusing to allow him to go that easy forcing Jack to rebel against them by first stealing their money, and then by taking them out one by one. Because the person that Jack assassinated also happens to be a client Tyler has to bodygaurd as well, once his uncle Ji found out that Tyler has a personal connection with the person who stole it began to feel obligated to retrieve the money back Jack stole who also have to cross paths with the mercenaries as well- not that Tyler would know that too all hell breaks loose. There are some amazing sequences shown on here such as the 'hiding in the refridgerator' routine while hanging around in an exploding apartment which was being echoed in the "Indiana Jones And The Crystal Skull" film and didn't convince viewers that is possible but it does work well in "Time And Tide". And they're many scenes of gun dodging and rope jumping on top of high rises and so forth which is incredible to look at which the stunts are 'fast' and 'furious' and unlike any action film coming out of Hollywood, since as I said earlier so much is happening that it's virtually impossible to consume everything in one sitting. Using a gun to cut a baby chord a scene that occured near the end can only be seen and done in the movies but we can never see that in real life. And though not a perfect film the incredible scenes are usually thought up first with the story being written along the way- a routine that happends quite often in Hong Kong except this was directed and co-written by Tsui Hark of many action pack films including "Once Upon A Time In China" movies and "Peking Opera Blues" and a producer of some of John Woo's best action films to date including "The Killer" and "A Better Tomorrow" films. 3 out of 4 stars Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
