Neil Norman London Evening Standard The tone veers capriciously from sophisticated comedy to broad farce and melodrama, with too many digressions for it to be more than fitfully amusing. Blu B So this is supposed to be a RomCom AND a Merchant Ivory flick?!?? What the heck...I didn't laugh once and I seriously couldn't tell it was trying to be funny at all. The editing and pacing are terrible here. First off it's so unfocused in terms of who the main character is and what idea were focusing on. Is it about the divorce of Watt's character? The mistress plot with the poltiican with Hudson? Her parents relationship? Watts & Hudson's relationship dynamics? the freakin murder that happens? And a few other things? Were never sure and it bounces around TERRIBLY so much that you lose trakc of what the heck is going on and never laugh once in the process. I thought when she slit her wrist that was the climax and we jsut forgot about that in under 30 seconds to look at nice food. Than it turns into a Hitchcock style hostage situation on top of the Eifel Tower out of nowhere after a murder which lost me completely. Than it just forgot about that and ended trying to wrap up all the other subplots. On top of the poor structure, lack of focus, and straight complete lack of a cohesive story, everything else is just ok about it which is a big letdown considering who the director is. The framing, cinematography in general, musical score is all just so basic and forgettable. The setting which fits a Ivory flick isn't memorable at all and neither are the characters because of how unfocused it is. The scenes themselves make sense on their own but they just don't add up when edited together at all. Skip This. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/25/24 Full Review susan j Not for the explosions, videogames, and superheros crowd. For others, thoroughly enjoyable. Incredible cast. Packed top to bottom with fabulous actors--some well-known, some less so. It's a poignant thoughtful human film, with depth and subtly. My guess is when it came out people didn't like it but now it's kind of a rare gem, with depth, complexity, and thoughtful meanderings....plus shots of Paris, bits about art, gorgeous cinematography, haute cuisine, beautiful young people, interesting story. Watching it felt like a respite from our fraught angry divisive world of 2023. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Plot holes galore, disconnected cuts, and a bevy of continuity errors are nothing compared to the surface performances and flat story. Oof not good. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review steve d The actresses are likable but their characters and the film are not. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Holmes's character distracts from the otherwise entertaining movie Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Le Divorce stars Kate Hudson and Naomi Watts as sisters living in France. This movie is based on the book I never read and don't plan on reading. This flick is a bore showcasing the upper middle class families and their problems. Watts's husband leaves her while being pregnant, while he goes off with another married person. The story depicts the French and American cultures and how different we are from each other. Overall it was an ok movie, nothing to remember. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Read all reviews
