In this adaptation of Jane Austen's beloved novel, Elizabeth Bennet (Keira Knightley) lives with her mother, father and sisters in the English countryside. As the eldest, she faces mounting pressure from her parents to marry. When the outspoken Elizabeth is introduced to the handsome and upper-class Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen), sparks fly. Although there is obvious chemistry between the two, Darcy's overly reserved nature threatens the fledgling relationship.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Sure, it's another adaptation of cinema's fave Jane Austen novel, but key performances and a modern filmmaking sensibility make this familiar period piece fresh and enjoyable.

Adam Kempenaar Filmspotting "Wright’s filmmaking is elegant, vibrant and prudently ostentatious." Rated: 4.5/5 Apr 13, 2025 Full Review Angie Errigo Empire Magazine Joe Wright should be applauded for delivering a vividly realised Austen adap -- one which confirms Knightley has graduated from the Jackie Bisset of the '00s to this decade's Julie Christie. Julia R I wanted to like this movie, really I did. The language I thought was appalling, and Georgiana’s quip that her brother must “force Elizabeth” to play duets was frankly eye rolling. Mrs Bennett was not obnoxious enough, we, the audience, were supposed to be as embarrassed as Elizabeth and there was nothing to be embarrassed about. This Mr and Mrs Bennett are also supposed to be barely able to stand each other & these two were clearly devoted to each other. I know the book isn’t necessarily for everyone but was it too much to ask that the director read the book? Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 04/08/25 Full Review F T A beautiful movie with beautiful costumes, set design, music, cinematography, and character portrayal. Pride & Prejudice (2005) is so utterly charming that you spend a great deal of the movie dreading that something bad might happen to the characters it so thoroughly convinces you to love and root for. It is a comfort movie that makes one feel warm, hopeful, nostalgic, and happy, and it is an utter escape from everything else going on in the world. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/06/25 Full Review Shadow C Soundtrack, Cinematography, Acting... all awesome. A movie that I rewatch at least once a year. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/29/25 Full Review Carmen P Matthew Macfadyen is the only reason I kept watching. He is such a powerful presence in the movie! Well, of course, Judi Dench and Donald Sutherland are amazing. Everyone else and everything else was so disappointing - all the characters looked like they had not washed their hair in ages, so sloppy, the whole background was pitiful. The insistence on scenes with pigs running around, cows being fed. They looked like a modern family where kids answer back and go crazy. I did not like this version. Did not like Jane AT ALL! Did not like Keira K., sorry, none of them. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/24/25 Full Review Grms 2 I love every single minute of this movie ❤️ Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/23/25 Full Review Audience Member This movie was my gateway into Jane Austen films and literature and set the bar high. It is the most interesting cinematography-wise and emotionally in performance than any other adaptations of her work. Worth rewatching for the small details throughout.
