After a bite from a genetically altered insect gives him superhuman abilities, teenage loser Rick Riker (Drake Bell) decides to use his powers for good. Donning an uncomfortably tight costume, Rick becomes a mysterious crime fighter known as The Dragonfly. But standing in the way of truth, justice and the American Way is an evil villain known as The Hourglass, who plans to become immortal by sucking the life force out of anyone who gets in his way.

Superhero Movie was released in 2008, and as a fan of Drake Bell, I remember watching it not long after its initial release. Now, fast forward to 2025, I decided to revisit the movie—currently available on Amazon Prime with a subscription—to see how it holds up by today’s standards. For a rip-off spoof comedy based on Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man (2002), the movie does a decent job of copying its original source material. Leslie Nielsen is a highlight, which comes as no surprise, but my biggest shock was seeing the celebrity cameos from stars who have since gone on to have bigger careers, including the director. Superhero Movie, however, unfortunately suffers from dialogue that hasn’t aged well and from too many gags that lack substance or connection to the overarching story, which itself isn’t developed enough—even with a runtime of less than 80 minutes.
