Residents of a small New Zealand town are eagerly anticipating a visit from Queen Elizabeth II after one young local, Elizabeth (Sally Andrews), begs the royal to come in a string of letters. For Elizabeth, the queen's impending arrival means everything, until she befriends a Maori woman, Hira (Vicky Haughton), who is campaigning against the queen's appearance. Elizabeth learns that Hira is still haunted by atrocities the British committed against the Maori people almost 100 years ago.

Critics Consensus

An excess of earnestness and plot twists derail an otherwise charming family film.

Audience Member I loved this movie, even though it began one way and ended up as something completely different. The lead actress was wonderful and the movie as a whole was very well done. I highly recommend the Making Of bonus feature. That being said, I absolutely HATED the main character's brother. I wanted to smack him. He was horrible and my only qualm is that he didn't get what was coming to him. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member good historical drama based upon actual events Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member An outstanding family film. Elizabeth Wakefield is eager for the Queen's visit to her small New Zealand town. As the Queen's visit draws closer, history and pride in the town collide and Elizabeth's loyalties to her family and friends are tested. This is such a brilliant story. The screenplay was well written and the cinematography was beautiful. www.what-to-watch.com Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Nice film for young teens. Very sweet... Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member Family film from New Zealand told from the perspective of a young teen. She's persistent and has lots of heart. A bit sappy but the messages of racial tolerance, truth overcoming falsehoods, and the importance of friendship are positive and worth watching.
