Audience Member Pretty good documentary about tattoos in the Gulag... As long as you don't mind reading subtitles... Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member A rare look into the Russian prison system and its inhabitants. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member A pretty good documentary on the Russian Prison system. Spends a lot of time on the importance of tattoos in Russian Criminal culture as well. A gritty and uncomfortable experience for sure, and as such will not cater to all tastes, but this is an artfully shot and honest portrayel of a place that all of us hope to never end up.Worth seeing. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Documentary about life in an Russian Prison. Very moving and interesting. You hear stories about how truly awful life is in those prisons and the things that people will do to survive them. The movie goes into how the the drug culture has changed what was an honor code among the prisoners... and how tattoos were used as a method for people to tell their stories and life journey's to complete strangers. The over crowding, the lack of health care and also the appalling food that is served to these people is so distressing. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member Not as interesting of a Documentary as I thought it would be. It was impressive the drawings made with such primitive instruments and ink (the ink was made of soot & urine - yuk!). I found that the film focused more on the state of the prison system more than the film's subject: tattoos. I will say that their prison system is horrible. They spend about what the cost of a loaf of bread is on each prisoner. Would have liked to see what their ratio of returned and or rehabilitated prisoners were. I can't imagine anyone even THINKING of committing a crime to be put back in there. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member While some of the things we see are striking and very interesting, this left me feeling like we could've explored so much more on this subject. The fact that it touches upon the corruption and utter horror of the Russian federal prison system but doesn't delve too deep also leaves me feeling like this documentary was merely the tip of the iceberg on a much broader topic.
