Audience Member Dam Street is an excellent Chinese drama about a pregnant teen and the consequences of her decisions ten years later. While the story is simple on paper, the film's precise direction and superb acting elevates it above what would normally result in a sappy drama and into something much deeper, more realistic, and more emotional as a result. Another plus is how it deals with the emotions through a slow progression, instead of dropping the emotional aspects like a sack of bricks on the viewer (I'm looking at you, Nicholas Sparks films). Dam Street is an eerie and beautifully made drama that is restrained in just the right ways. It's a shame this film isn't more well known, because it is a damn fine drama. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member a very powerful drama. and kind of sad too. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Spanning ten years, Dam Street reflects the social change and economic growth in China. Despite these changes, women giving birth to illegitimate children is still stigmatised and frowned upon. This social framework is backed by an emotive and deeply touching personal story penned by genius scriptwriter Fang Li, and with top notch cinematography and editing. Li Yu, whose work have been disgracefully censored from time to time, is no doubt one of the the most daring and provocative filmmakers in mainland China, and a true successor to the social movies of the so called fifth generation directors of the eighties. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member Losing face or losing family? Which is worse? Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member You naturally talk about family and think of your own family after seeing this film. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Very interesting view of life in contemporary China, in the provinces, for young women. Somewhat depressing.
