Critics Consensus

Tense, nicely shot, and uncommonly intelligent, The Crazies is a horror remake that, unusually, works.

Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online Mediocre acting and a tired plotline ruins what's left of the movie. Rated: D Sep 11, 2017 Full Review J. R. Jones Chicago Reader [A] respectable update. Jan 3, 2011 Full Review Peter Rainer Christian Science Monitor While it loses the charm of Romero's low-budget clunkiness, it is in all other regards superior. Rated: B- Jan 3, 2011 Full Review Justin Brown Medium Popcorn It's not the most original film but Timothy Olyphant held this down as the lead. It's a harrowing story that has a dark ending, which hurts your desire to rewatch this but it's still solid. Rated: 3/5 Nov 6, 2024 Full Review Brandon Collins Medium Popcorn While this does have many beats that are similar to films in this genre, the leads were strong and there was some haunting imagery that makes this an interesting watch. The opening baseball scene is really effective. Rated: 3/5 Nov 6, 2024 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review One of those rare cases where the remake lives up to the original, if not exceeds it. Audience Member A brilliant take on the infection sub genre, showing how anger can take hold of the human mind, at the hands of a deadly virus. It was a very beautifully shot film, with many of the scenes bringing me awe. The character development and the stories fluidity however, could've been improved, as with a longer run time or more focus on the development, i believe that the film would've felt more fluid and that i would have gained a stronger feeling towards the characters. All in all, it was a solid film, that had many things it did great and some things it could've improved upon Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/20/24 Full Review Justin T This is very well made but it is not great. It is just about above average. Considering that most people will have some basic idea of what this film is about having read the synopsis or seen the trailer, I think that they spend way too long setting up the premise. Even if you knew nothing about this film you would work out what they are building up to way before they get there. And this build-up offers very little in the way of characterisation but that is because the characters are generic and forgettable. Although, if you buy into the atmosphere then this setup is not as tedious as it sounds. The problem is that the forced jump scares go against this atmosphere. And this atmosphere is further ruined with some mild comedy. I saw the original The Crazies (1973) a long time ago so I don’t remember it that well but I can fairly confidently say that this film is better than the original but less memorable. There are some good gore and violence but plenty of convenient and unrealistic moments with them. The ending is a bit of an anticlimax. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/04/24 Full Review Ian F A highly respectable and respectful script (with a healthy dose of wit); commendable standard of acting; impressive special effects; relentless and at times claustrophobic tension - all combine to allow us to overlook the occasional holes in the plot. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/30/24 Full Review Stephen H Very entertaining. Underrated and thrilling. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/25/24 Full Review Calvin T Damn I'm glad I decided on this ✌🏾 Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/24/24 Full Review Audience Member Fantastically entertaining flick. Timothy Olyphant will forever be one of the greatest Hollywood stars that has been greatly overlooked. And he brings his A-game as usual, and so does the rest of the cast. Particularly Joe Anderson as Olyphants cohort. The movie has an intriguing start, maniacal middle and an awesome ending. Brilliantly directed, edited and really well written. The movie has moments that flip stereotypes on it's head, and the movie subverts a lot of expectations you'd have as an avid movie watcher because you expect certain things to happen. And there are things characters do in a movie that are purely done because the director wants you to feel something. Well, in this movie that happens, but ends up being the correct decision by the characters because it ends up literally saving their lives. So I respect the heck out of this movie. Thank you!
