Critics Consensus

Tense, nicely shot, and uncommonly intelligent, The Crazies is a horror remake that, unusually, works.

Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online Mediocre acting and a tired plotline ruins what's left of the movie. Rated: D Sep 11, 2017 Full Review J. R. Jones Chicago Reader [A] respectable update. Jan 3, 2011 Full Review Peter Rainer Christian Science Monitor While it loses the charm of Romero's low-budget clunkiness, it is in all other regards superior. Rated: B- Jan 3, 2011 Full Review Justin Brown Medium Popcorn It's not the most original film but Timothy Olyphant held this down as the lead. It's a harrowing story that has a dark ending, which hurts your desire to rewatch this but it's still solid. Rated: 3/5 Nov 6, 2024 Full Review Brandon Collins Medium Popcorn While this does have many beats that are similar to films in this genre, the leads were strong and there was some haunting imagery that makes this an interesting watch. The opening baseball scene is really effective. Rated: 3/5 Nov 6, 2024 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review One of those rare cases where the remake lives up to the original, if not exceeds it. Audience Member Fantastically entertaining flick. Timothy Olyphant will forever be one of the greatest Hollywood stars that has been greatly overlooked. And he brings his A-game as usual, and so does the rest of the cast. Particularly Joe Anderson as Olyphants cohort. The movie has an intriguing start, maniacal middle and an awesome ending. Brilliantly directed, edited and really well written. The movie has moments that flip stereotypes on it's head, and the movie subverts a lot of expectations you'd have as an avid movie watcher because you expect certain things to happen. And there are things characters do in a movie that are purely done because the director wants you to feel something. Well, in this movie that happens, but ends up being the correct decision by the characters because it ends up literally saving their lives. So I respect the heck out of this movie. Thank you! Does miss a couple of things. Read a little of my book b.utt 6.10.24 8.3/0. D.B Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/06/24 Full Review Craig B I highly recommend this 2010 remake of the George A Romero classic. It is a very good remake, which I'll admit was a pleasant surprise. The great man himself, George A. Romero, ensured it was relatively faithful to the original, serving as an Executive Producer. Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell lead a solid cast, which benefits from well-realised characters, great pacing and an ever-increasing sense of dread. Where this remake succeeds over the original is in the early set-up, laying valuable ground work to establish some background for the main characters, which ensures you are engaged with them from the outset. Additionally, the movie starts cautiously, and escalates gradually, giving the town's main characters time to experience the evils that have enveloped their community before external entities came into the story. The original movie immediately started with the military already on the scene within the first 5 minutes, giving no time to develop the main characters into people whose fate you can became invested in. I actually watched the remake first, then watched the original directly after (as I could not recall ever seeing it previously). Overall, the 2010 remake of The Crazies stands on its own. Solid acting, well-developed and likeable characters, some very tense and chilling moments and thrilling action sequences make this a horror-thriller well worth your time. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/22/24 Full Review KB B This was such a compelling movie with good acting and storyline. I liked it so much I bought the Blu-ray years ago. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/21/24 Full Review Arthur M The acting is disgustingly bad, and it drags down even the best written parts of the script, which is already slow as hell. Seriously, how come a script filled with well-positioned action still feels like a rhytmic disaster like this? Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/18/24 Full Review Read all reviews
