Critics Consensus

Tense, nicely shot, and uncommonly intelligent, The Crazies is a horror remake that, unusually, works.

Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online Mediocre acting and a tired plotline ruins what's left of the movie. Rated: D Sep 11, 2017 Full Review J. R. Jones Chicago Reader [A] respectable update. Jan 3, 2011 Full Review Peter Rainer Christian Science Monitor While it loses the charm of Romero's low-budget clunkiness, it is in all other regards superior. Rated: B- Jan 3, 2011 Full Review Justin Brown Medium Popcorn It's not the most original film but Timothy Olyphant held this down as the lead. It's a harrowing story that has a dark ending, which hurts your desire to rewatch this but it's still solid. Rated: 3/5 Nov 6, 2024 Full Review Brandon Collins Medium Popcorn While this does have many beats that are similar to films in this genre, the leads were strong and there was some haunting imagery that makes this an interesting watch. The opening baseball scene is really effective. Rated: 3/5 Nov 6, 2024 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review One of those rare cases where the remake lives up to the original, if not exceeds it. Syed M one of the best zombie infection/apocalyptic movie... Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/19/25 Full Review Daniel C. M This remake suffers from what i like to call the "70s Disconnection Syndrome", as in, like pretty much every single other remake of a 70s movie, it lacks the gritty, raw, misanthropic, and borderline oppressive aesthetic that pretty much every 70s movie that wasn't a fullblown comedy, a musical or a epic had. It also lacks the political thriller aspect of Master Romero's legendary direction-style. However, this movie also adresses and solves probably the biggest flaw with the original: it's social and survival thriller aspect, which is now here in full-force, presenting the effective collapse of a civilization by the hands of not only the State but also the commonfolk, as viewed by the commonfolk. Featuring great performances and action with effects that aged very well, this film guarantees not only a entertaining and thrilling session, but also a reflective and quite frankly intelligent one. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/17/25 Full Review Dylan S I was pleasantly surprised by this film. Some of the acting wasn't the greatest, but the general atmosphere is quite good, and the way it's filmed is well done. The beginning of the movie is brighter, warm feeling colors, and as the story progresses it's very dark, greys and cold colors. Worth a watch for sure Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/14/25 Full Review Gary T Loved it.. moves at a good pace. Whilst there are a couple of moments of corny acting (towels/bedroom), overall I think the acting pulls of a good (better than original) remake. The special effects are good without going over the top, story line pretty much believable (in the fiction world), and tension kept up from the get go. Its also relatively a good intro to horror for mid to late teens. (not too much swearing, sex or repetitive gore). But why oh why cant wives and girlfriends stay out of trouble!!!! (joke :)) Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/25 Full Review Julian S Everything you want in a remake: staying true to the original’s vision while leveling up its execution. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/08/25 Full Review Tyler B It is managing to maintain suspense well. Good enough, even as a remake. Despite its inevitable, curtisophical doom amongst modern part-time critics. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/03/25 Full Review Read all reviews
