When 9 (Elijah Wood) springs to life, it finds itself in a post-apocalyptic world where humans no longer exist, and the only signs of life are sentient rag dolls like itself and the machines that hunt them. Though it is the youngest of the group, 9 convinces comrades that the only way to survive against the machines is to stop hiding, go on the offensive, and find out why the machines want to destroy them. As 9 and the group learn, civilization hinges on their success or failure.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Although its story is perhaps too familiar and less complex than some might wish, 9 is visually spectacular, and director Shane Acker's attention to detail succeeds in drawing viewers into the film's universe.

9 is a challenge to remember our roots... to not get caught in our beliefs or our politics or - most especially - become chained to the powers of our intellect alone. Go to Full Review

The new version stays so true to the original you could describe it as a feature-length short-which is not the most staggering accomplishment. Go to Full Review

Gorgeously animated, beautifully executed and incredibly imaginative, Shane Acker's 9 manages to nonetheless feel a little bit like something you've seen before. Go to Full Review

With plenty of better animated films on offer this year, it is probably best to save time and money, and watch the short instead. Go to Full Review

By telling a story that could not be filmed in live-action, Acker makes animation the wonderfully unpredictable and visionary art form it should be. Too bad he doesn’t back up his glorious animation with an equally interesting story. Go to Full Review

If the story lacks in expected profoundness, the generally impressive character designs more than make up for it. Go to Full Review

holden a @Benzler 6d I remember watching this movie as a kid and it terrified me. The dark atmosphere showed a reality of war and the danger of science that left a lasting impression to this very day. The animation/visuals are amazing and the story is very entertaining. See more Noah H @Noah85 Dec 31 One of my favorite animated movies of all time. This thing seriously deserves more love. The apocalyptic setting is SO COOL and all the robot characters are AWESOME! This movie is a great example of an animated film willing to take a chance by bringing us a lot of dark and mature themes that some kids may not understand. The action is THRILLING with AMAZING CHOREOGRAPHY. There's also a lot of interesting lore about what happened to the humans and what the purposes of the robots were. The voice acting is also SPOT ON! Elijah Wood, Jennifer Connelly, Martin Landau, John C. Reilly, Crispin Glover, and Cristopher Plummer all do a great job here (RIP Christopher Plummer). Additionally, I may be the only one who thinks this, but I personally think the animation holds up really well for being 16 years old. It did not feel like a video game to me at all. Man, I really wish we had more movies like 9 nowadays. See more Read all reviews
