Mark R. Leeper rec.arts.movies.reviews 'Startlingly original' is not necessarily a good thing, particularly when it is at the cost of good storytelling. Rated: 4/10 Apr 1, 2008 Full Review Anton Bitel Film4 Blighted but bold, this Shakespearean adaptation messes with the Dane to the ultimate disadvantage of its own narrative coherence. Audience Member Ok, so take The Grudge, a Lady GaGa music video, and Shakespeare and put them all together and you get this. Which could have been really cool if the pacing had been quicker and if the audience could tell what was going on at all. I feel like whoever put the script together couldn't really figure out what parts of the original text to cut and to keep. The result was that Hamlet's motivation became solely the ghost's appearance. And also some vision of himself as an Asian kid, for some reason. The high point was that Polonius was transformed into Polonia, a femme fatale who was behind the whole murder plot and who was drugging Ophelia so that she would be complacent in the plot! Fun! Anyway, this had so much potential and so many good ideas, but it ended up just giving me a headache and putting me to sleep. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Read all reviews
