What to Know

Critics Consensus

Stuffed with characters and overly reliant on uninspired dialogue, Eclipse won't win The Twilight Saga many new converts, despite an improved blend of romance and action fantasy.

Alex Vega Autostraddle I wanted "terrible/AWESOME" and all we got was painfully terrible. I am upset. Jul 13, 2021 Full Review Joe Lipsett Hazel & Katniss & Harry & Starr Podcast It's better than New Moon (because something actually happens), but both Jacob and Edward are insufferable and Bella's decision to become a vampire remains irrational. Janky FX, not enough Dallas Howard and bad wigs sink the ship. Paulina It was amazing to be able to watch it again on the big screen! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/20/25 Full Review SkyRo P Eclipse, the third installment in the Twilight Saga, continues to build upon the franchise with stronger world-building, new characters, and deeper lore. As a fan of the series, I appreciated how the film pushed the story forward while maintaining the emotional tone and atmosphere that fans had come to expect from Twilight and New Moon. It’s a creatively structured film that delivers some memorable moments and introduces both iconic heroes and villains to the cinematic universe. From a storytelling perspective, Eclipse succeeds in deepening the mythology and setting the stage for the larger conflicts to come. The ongoing love triangle and the brewing war with the newborn vampires kept the narrative engaging and gave audiences plenty to anticipate. That said, my biggest criticism remains the same across the series: Kristen Stewart’s performance as Bella. I don’t believe she brought much life or depth to the character, and her delivery felt flat compared to the more dynamic performances of Robert Pattinson (Edward), Taylor Lautner (Jacob), and the rest of the Cullen family. In my opinion, it’s their performances that carried the film and gave emotional weight to scenes she was in. Another major disappointment was the recasting of Victoria. The original actress, Rachelle Lefevre, brought a fierce presence to the role, and her replacement just didn’t live up to that standard. The new Victoria lacked the intensity and fear factor needed to make the character compelling—she came off more like a generic villain than a real threat. The recasting felt like a misstep that weakened the emotional payoff of the plot. Despite these flaws, Eclipse is still a solid installment. It keeps fans engaged, expands the universe in meaningful ways, and maintains the momentum of the franchise. I recommend it, especially for those who’ve been following the saga. It may not be perfect, but it does enough to keep audiences invested and eager for what comes next. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/04/25 Full Review Siddharth G i think i liked the movie and it didnt bore me.....everything was ok but i felt it was bad encouraging the idea that the heroin would kiss someone on purpose and the hero would still be ok with it? and marriage.... the rest was good tho... (you cant sell a kiss to people you dont love in a way?) Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/14/25 Full Review Julian S ECLIPSE is a clear improvement, offering a more layered backstory and greater depth. The two male leads are obnoxious but fully lean into it, while Stewart commands the role, despite the distracting wig. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/07/25 Full Review Jens B 'Some say the world will perish in fire, some say in ice. But after I've tasted the pleasure, I believe in fire.' For the third part, David Slade takes the helm and delivers the best "Twilight" film to date. The color grading is within acceptable limits, the visual effects have improved considerably, the music is OK and the dialogue is no longer as blatantly stupid as in the two previous films. In addition, the third attempt finally has antagonists who have the minimum level of presence so that they are not forgotten again immediately after the credits. Like Bella, I have now come to terms with her role as a passive female being whose goal in life will be marriage. The problem with the many small improvements in "Eclipse" is this: the trash factor is mostly missing. Yes, you can still have a lot of fun with this film. But the level of garbage, especially in the first part, is no longer reached. The film is made too competently for that. Instead of a series of WTF moments, it is often boring. And just because "Eclipse" is better made doesn't mean that Bella, Edward and Jacob's third big screen adventure is even remotely good. Because you can't even call it an adventure.
