What to Know

Critics Consensus

Tim Burton's Alice sacrifices the book's minimal narrative coherence -- and much of its heart -- but it's an undeniable visual treat.

Anthony Lane New Yorker The movie badgers rather than charms, but it's rescued by Helena Bonham Carter's brisk performance as the Red Queen. Jul 26, 2021 Full Review Liza Featherstone Bitch Media Disney's is kind of a tepid liberal feminism, but that's far more badass and entertaining than no feminism at all. Dec 23, 2020 Full Review Deborah Ross The Spectator It's horribly generic. This is a Disney film and it feels like a Disney film, whereas I'd hoped it would feel like a Tim Burton film. Aug 30, 2018 Full Review Michael Leader Den of Geek A shallow, stunted spectacle that does surprisingly little with its rich source. Instead, it is Tim Burton’s successful stab at inoffensive, unchallenging children’s entertainment. Rated: 3/5 May 7, 2024 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The outcome is loud and excessive and just plain awful, reminding us that there’s more to filmmaking than art design alone. Rated: 1/4 Aug 22, 2023 Full Review Cory Woodroof For the Win (USA Today) It’s a whole lot of noise thrown together with loose hands into not much of anything. Jon L Alice takes a backseat to Hatter Depp….that says enough. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/16/24 Full Review Dale R This film is an amalgamation of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll with a tiny bit of the 1951 Disney film thrown into the filter of Tim Burton’s direction. While I was excited to see Burton’s version of Wonderland, the movie changed so much of the characters from the source material that it was not a movie about Wonderland. So much so that they changed the name of Wonderland to Underland. This film looks terrific, from the costumes Alice wears to the CGI. I also enjoy the story arc of Alice and the new character of Bayard. The rest of the characters are reduced to delivering exposition or short gags. If you would like to see a totally unique version of Lewis Carroll’s works then check this movie out, otherwise skip it. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/07/24 Full Review Audience Member This movie has vary stunning visuals of course no live action re make can live up too the legacy and nostalgia of the original version of the film but this is a must see for Tim Burton fans and has amazing actors and is definitely a must see just for the visuals and the acters Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/19/24 Full Review Loltokyou Y L'univers de Alice au pays des merveilles me fait encore rêver aujourd'hui bien que je sois une adulte. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/03/24 Full Review Eye C Too much CGI, although the story I like, but nothing seems realistic in the “Wonderland Way”, if you know what I mean. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/28/24 Full Review Read all reviews
