Critics Consensus

Tim Burton's Alice sacrifices the book's minimal narrative coherence -- and much of its heart -- but it's an undeniable visual treat.

Anthony Lane The New Yorker The movie badgers rather than charms, but it's rescued by Helena Bonham Carter's brisk performance as the Red Queen. Jul 26, 2021 Full Review Liza Featherstone Bitch Media Disney's is kind of a tepid liberal feminism, but that's far more badass and entertaining than no feminism at all. Dec 23, 2020 Full Review Deborah Ross The Spectator It's horribly generic. This is a Disney film and it feels like a Disney film, whereas I'd hoped it would feel like a Tim Burton film. Aug 30, 2018 Full Review Clotilde Chinnici Loud and Clear Reviews Alice in Wonderland also portrays Alice’s transition into adulthood: the physical journey into Wonderland mirrors a psychological journey of personal growth in the main character. Rated: 4.5/5 Sep 14, 2024 Full Review Michael Leader Den of Geek A shallow, stunted spectacle that does surprisingly little with its rich source. Instead, it is Tim Burton’s successful stab at inoffensive, unchallenging children’s entertainment. Rated: 3/5 May 7, 2024 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The outcome is loud and excessive and just plain awful, reminding us that there’s more to filmmaking than art design alone. Bobby B To quote the meme "I mean, it's alright." It overused cgi, but it is creative. It's message fights itself but it's acting is brilliant. It's alright. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/18/24 Full Review Brooke T I obviously love a Tim Burton movie, like anyone. I also happen to love the original 1951 Alice in Wonderland, for the colours, characters, the imagination and the magic it provides. This movie was not at all what I expected, they turned a lot of characters into lack lustre, dull characters and the whole movie just had a grim undertone which took the magic out of the story. Besides from that, there was so much CGI it was hard to immerse yourself in the movie and it almost felt a bit chaotic, or like a video game. One thing I particularly didn’t like was the constant changing of scale of characters which just threw me off. I get the idea of it, but it wasn’t executed effectively. The only good part was the Red Queen and the Mad Hatter which added the whimsy and colour the movie needed. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/21/24 Full Review Marlon W fun, tim burton overdid it with the amount of special effects, but nothing that ruins the experience, because the plot and characters are cool Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/27/24 Full Review László K To be honest the original story is not my favourite, but I wanted to give this film a chance. I really like Disney movies, but this was really underwhelming for me. I knew everything that is going to happen, there were no surprises and I couldn't connect with any character. The view was great but the story was boring Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/07/24 Full Review Rich S It's Tim Burton's show and I'm guessing that he got what he wanted out of the performances, the costumes, the art and the sets. But I'm not sure it's what the audiences wanted or expected. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/24/24 Full Review David R I watched this movie so many times as a kid and loved it. I was scared to rewatch it as an adult thinking I would hate it, but it still holds up. It's not as great as I remembered it when I was a kid, but I still really enjoy the movie and I don't get all the negative reviews about it.
