Traveling back in time isn't simple, as James Cole (Bruce Willis) learns the hard way. Imprisoned in the 2030s, James is recruited for a mission that will send him back to the 1990s. Once there, he's supposed to gather information about a nascent plague that's about to exterminate the vast majority of the world's population. But, aside from the manic Jeffrey (Brad Pitt), he gets little in the way of cooperation, not least from medical gatekeepers like Dr. Kathryn Railly (Madeleine Stowe).

Critics Consensus

The plot's a bit of a jumble, but excellent performances and mind-blowing plot twists make 12 Monkeys a kooky, effective experience.

Ed Potton Times (UK) This dystopian time-travelling sci-fi is a reminder that the director can make films that are visually inventive, intellectually engaging and downright exciting. Rated: 4/5 Oct 12, 2018 Full Review Jonathan Rosenbaum Chicago Reader While all of Gilliam's movies are worth seeing, there's a fair amount of his designer grimness here mixed in with the cabaret comedy. May 27, 2011 Full Review Variety Staff Variety Neither as visually compelling as Brazil nor as emotionally gripping as The Fisher King. Mar 26, 2009 Full Review Elisa Guimarães Collider The fine line between the reasonable and the absurd is at the center of this flawed but gripping story about apocalypses and time-travel. Rated: B+ Feb 1, 2024 Full Review D.M. Palmer Vague Visages Their aesthetic production is taken at face value, their delusion is validated by the collective imagination... Nov 8, 2023 Full Review Michael Atkinson Spin The movie contemplates the circularities of time, apocalypse culture, and movies themselves... That shouldn't seem like some kind of pop miracle, but it does. Dec 27, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Divine77 F We are getting through to her! Don't pull me back just yet! I can't do anything more now, I have to go, have a Happy Easter. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/24/25 Full Review Jonathan N I love Terry Gilliam films. They are great. This one is no exception. The story leaves something to be desired though. The straight up coincidence of Bruce Willis' character meeting Brad Pitt's randomly in a big city was kind of dumb. And I guess maybe I really don't understand why animals took over the world. How does a virus cause that? Those issues aside, the rest of the film is so good! It's campy and yet so well-done. It' is definitely my cup of tea. I do also like the ending, it does tie everything together in a very interesting way, although it's been done and re-done by other time travel movies. Mandatory viewing. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/23/25 Full Review Pf M Most people haven't seen nor heard of the source film...It's a revised modernized version of La Jetee, a French Sci-Fi film. Once you view that, it's easier to relate/evaluate this movie. May never quite work as an airtight paradoxical tale, it still shines due to Gilliam's excellent vision and realization, and for stellar performances all around! Pitt, who wore contacts to look less heart-throbby, Stowe who's great plus exquisitely beautiful too, Willis is also pretty solid. Even Plummer and Frank Gorshin - in small parts - really deliver the goods. Very enjoyable...8/10 from me :). Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/28/25 Full Review Jerry G Some excellent performances but it's a bit of a nonsense. This isn't a profound insight into .... Blah, blah, unless you're just under high school level. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/16/25 Full Review Re C Mind blowing movie!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/14/25 Full Review Read all reviews
