Critics Consensus

Relying on psychological tension rather than overt violence and gore, 1408 is a genuinely creepy thriller with a strong lead performance by John Cusack.

Ben Kenigsberg Time Out Rated: 2/5 Nov 18, 2011 Full Review Michael Atkinson Sight & Sound Another actor may have made 1408 seem as thin and fake as an episode of Tales from the Crypt, but Cusack lends it that badly needed extra milligram of conviction. Jul 7, 2010 Full Review Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald Cusack always manages to underscore panic with irony. Rated: 3/5 Feb 1, 2008 Full Review Ezequiel Obregón EscribiendoCine ... A tour de force of apparitions and hard-to-explain events from a realistic perspective. Rated: 4/5 Jul 11, 2022 Full Review Micheal Compton Bowling Green Daily News 1408 really zips along and is one of the more entertaining thrillers in recent memory. Aurora C actually bad, the effects r kinda cool i guess, but me and my friends all put this on and we were actually laughing at how ridiculous everything about this movie is. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/22/25 Full Review Emilliano Jr S Scary at some point but the confusing ending ruined it. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/01/25 Full Review Daniel J Scary at points! Great at creating a creepy vibe and the story is interesting. The landing and final stretch are a little rough, otherwise I would give it 4/5. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/27/24 Full Review Peter F Fairly entertaining while watching, but it never manages to make the viewer forget its incredibly silly core: an evil *room*. In a hotel. I mean come on. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/21/24 Full Review Brad H It's ok. Not scary. Could have had a better actor play the part. The alternate ending is actually better in my opinion. But they rarely show that. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/25/24 Full Review Madie R "Viewers beware...You're in for a scare." Do you dare enter room 1408 in the Dolphin Hotel? While the plot is a simple story taken from a Stephen King short story, I assure you the scares are real. As on would expect when you hear the name "Stephen King". It's up to viewers to decide if the room is haunted or if it is just a room that attracts pure evil and is intent on breaking you and driving you into madness by preying on your greatest fears.
