Bo B Middling plot and really poor visual effects. Not sure how this was nominated for effects. It’s bad 80’s visuals all around. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/23/24 Full Review Jerry C Never expected to be like the original, but still entertaining in its own way. Those not alive or too young in 1984 can't appreciate the U.S./Russia storyline except from a purely historical perspective. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/10/24 Full Review David W It was never going to have the same impact as the iconic original but I thought that, whilst more straightforward in its approach, it was a very worthy sequel. It's at it's strongest when it involves HAL but it has many fantastic scenes, a great cast who are uniformally excellent, great special effects, a coherent plot and a wonderful, thought provoking ending. In many ways it's stuck with me over the years just as much as the iconic 2001. A hugely enjoyable movie and a memorable, satisfyingly open resolution. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/03/24 Full Review R 9 A much more standard affair compared to its predecessor. Given that's the case, I honestly enjoyed this more than '2001: A Space Odyssey' - if only because it's more closer to what I'd personally want from a film than what that 1968 flick offers, which is moreso an attempted art piece. Of course, the original does things visibly and audibly far, far greater than this 1984 release - just plot-wise, this is better in my opinion. That's not to say that '2010' is something I'd consider great, because I wouldn't. It is, though, solid sci-fi fare, one I had a decent time watching. I'm not a fan of recasts, but Roy Scheider does a good job in place of William Sylvester as Heywood Floyd. Bob Balaban does well, while it's neat to see John Lithgow and Helen Mirren involved. I'm somewhat surprised (but agreeable) that this has, seemingly, been fairly well received. I was expecting it to be poorly thought of by the majority, as is usually the case for sequels of iconic movies that aren't cut from the same cloth; different director etc. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/16/24 Full Review Cameron M Good movie, not good sequel to 2001: A Space Odyessy. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/04/24 Full Review Joel H 2001: A Space Odyssey is a legendary and groundbreaking science fiction film. 2010: The Year We Make Contact is a pretty good sci-fi movie. It has a few moments of genuine suspense and some thought-provoking ideas, along with a fairly impressive cast who make this journey among the stars more believable. It is interesting, though, that the visual effects in 2001, while 15 years older, seem to hold up better than the ones in this movie. The ending is also somewhat abrupt and feels a little schmaltzy. I almost wish that 2010 wasn't a sequel, because it invites constant comparison to the original. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/03/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

TIME Magazine Flash: There is intelligent life in outer space. More, anyway, than in this amiable footnote of a movie. Nov 3, 2008 Full Review Time Out Hyams' sequel to Kubrick's big daddy of sci-fi movies may not have the novelty of 2001: A Space Odyssey, but it is still a better film than anyone could have dared to expect. Feb 9, 2006 Full Review Sergio Benítez Espinof Hyams' decision to separate his film from Kubrick`s one plays much more in favor of the very good feelings that the production leaves than it might seem at first glance.
