Peter Debruge Variety It’s not an easy watch, and though the finalists all seem “worthy” enough, one can’t help but crave a little levity. Mar 4, 2025 Full Review Patrick McDonald WBGR-FM (93.7 FM - Monroe, WI) Short Documentary form is a particular art, boldly proclaiming a subject matter in the starkest and shortest terms possible. INCIDENT was memorable ... mostly b/c of its Chicago roots ... but INSTRUMENTS OF A BEATING HEART is exquisite happiness. Cymbals! Rated: 5/5 Mar 1, 2025 Full Review Christopher Llewellyn Reed Hammer to Nail Once again, my favorite overall section was documentary, though unlike last year, there is one that I prefer above the others (with a close second), rather than a tie for the top three. Feb 21, 2025 Full Review Peter Keough Arts Fuse This year the Academy selected a stronger slate of nominees than usual in the short documentary category, perhaps because the timely theme of justice, in one form or another, inspires each. Feb 21, 2025 Full Review Al Alexander Movies Thru the Spectrum This year’s crop of Oscar-nominated documentary shorts is a wildly uneven bunch, with two standouts, a so-so entry and two more that leave you questioning how in the world they wound up here. Rated: B- Feb 13, 2025 Full Review Tom Santilli Movie Show Plus "Incident" may very well be the best of the group but they are all uniquely powerful and deeply unforgettable. Ashley A really good year for short documentary films. The Incident was very impactful, as was Ready, Warden. And Instruments of a Beating Heart was sheer delight. The first three were the best. I would have been okay skipping the last two but they were interesting. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/23/25 Full Review Lisa How will they choose a winner? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/23/25 Full Review Grant W 5 excellent movie shorts HIGHEST RECOMMEND!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/20/25 Full Review Manuel Morales Amazing heart breaking real stories Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/15/25 Full Review Annette v Extremely disappointing. We used to love viewing these short films up for Oscar’s nominations, however, the quality this year is just horrendous. Factually it’s very skewed to drive a particular narrative. Most of these topics and films could have been interesting and good value if it was presented with a full spectrum of facts and perspectives. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/24 Full Review Barbara K Boring. 4 out of 5. And subtitles did not work on one of them. Very disappointing. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/17/24 Full Review Read all reviews
