In 480 B.C. a state of war exists between Persia, led by King Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), and Greece. At the Battle of Thermopylae, Leonidas (Gerard Butler), king of the Greek city state of Sparta, leads his badly outnumbered warriors against the massive Persian army. Very cool story, artistry, and action. Very violent. Excellent comic book style movie, based on a Frank Miller graphic novel, similar style to Sin City.

The level simplicity and absolute spectacle of the film, dodging any real hope of historical accuracy, isn’t just hilarious at times, it’s absolutely mesmerizing. Narratively, it’s very simple stuff (Spartans fight big bad army, with a side of political drama), but between the one-liners, the stylized action, the visuals, or the super masculine energy of the whole film, you are guaranteed to be entertained. Just don’t expect a history lesson.

Synopsis
