Audience Member A touching tale of an old woman who lives alone in a shabby old apartment, after her husband gets killed in WWII. The movie portrays India after liberation from the British. Violet stoneham lives alone with her cat in the apartment, when she comes across one of her former students at school. The student's fiance a struggling writer, persuades his fiance to ask the teacher to let him work in her apartment. The teacher allows them and they all become associated. Stoneham being alone, loves the company and becomes attached to the young couple. But soon the couple gets married and the teacher is left alone to herself once again. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member bleak stuff. this ain't my fave aparna sen but da worst experience still goes to the japanese wife. what really grated in 36 chowringhee was the horridly dubbed english voices for violet and her brother, eddie. plus the not-too-great dvd quality. need to watch some light-hearted stuff next. bad! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member A touching, elegant story about an old Anglo-Indian teacher who finds herself becoming increasingly marginalized by her friends, family, and employer. The metaphor of India's changing cultural and social landscape is handled deftly, and makes itself felt without being too pushy. The whole film crafted with artful camerawork, very well written, and features excellent performances. One of my favorite moments was the montage cut to, of all things, "Yellow Polka Dot Bikini". Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Aparna Sen presents this National Award winning film which touches Hearts and takes you to a journey which showing you differwent aspects of love, relationship, oldage and loneliness! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member Sad, but interesting. At first I didn't feel much sympathy for the anglo-Indian lady and her community, but by the end of the movie, I felt her sense of belonging in the country had been stripped from her. A very subtle and interesting movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Read all reviews
