      Critics Consensus

As romantic comedies go, 40 Days and 40 Nights is smutty, sexist, and puerile.

Test T I watched this on DVD. It's generally ok, and quite good in places. It's actually a lot more serious than I had imagined, in that it attempts to explore some of the issues surrounding the main theme in the context of modern western society. It does drag a little at times as it begins to run out of ideas towards the end. Over all it's not bad if you have plenty of time on your hands to watch it. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/08/24 Full Review Jacob B 40 Days and 40 Nights is, for the most part, a harmless sex comedy. Josh Hartnett is likeable and I did want him to succeed in his goal, his interactions with a new love interest are endearing and I laughed a few times. It doesn't try to be anything special, it's mostly just Universal, with the assistance of Miramax, trying to keep the sex comedy trend going back when American Pie was still one of the studio's most popular IPs. However, this film gets what I would normally give three stars a bumping down to 2.5 is because of one disgusting act at the end that, for what it's worth, did cause people to realise that double standards are serious. The played-for-laughs sexual harassment was one thing since I suppose there needed to be some stakes regarding Hartnett's abstinence but then in the end, something happens that I was absolutely appalled by, not helped by the fact that this person gets away scot-free. I can see why this was the film's signature scene and its controversial nature isn't helped by how defensive the writer was when asked about it on Reddit. So yeah, this anti-sex comedy is mostly just a simple time-waster but that one infamous scene...ugh! Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/13/23 Full Review Stephen C LOL, so worth the 01 hour: and 34 minutes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Andre G It is a interesting movie. Very funny. Their are some parts that are dumb it kind of ruined the movie but it's still pretty funny. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/18/23 Full Review paloma b I guess I understand why this would be a good story but falls flat, not to mention tasteless. Matt (Josh Hartnett) is basically getting sexually harassed by his coworker and then raped by his ex-gf just to win a bet and break his bow of abstinence. Hartnett is a charming guy and acting is good, the rest of the cast is just overacting or just not memorable. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Avoid this movie at all costs , the only thing it's good for is victim blaming and enforcing sexist ideals absolutely awful.
