Lawyer Paula Rogers (Constance Bennett) is appointed to prosecute corrupt district attorney Bradley Wayne (Otto Kruger) for obstruction of justice in an effort to find a missing witness being held by Wayne's partner, racketeer Frank McCoy (Barry Sullivan). Blackmailed by McCoy into defending the criminals instead, Paula falls in love with prosecutor Robert Larrimore (Brian Aherne). As the two grow closer, they join professional forces to indict Wayne and McCoy.
