Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times June Diane Raphael has impeccable comic timing as Jake's mom, Kathy. Rated: 3.5/4 Dec 4, 2021 Full Review Nick Allen RogerEbert.com 8-Bit Christmas may have a more grounded approach to gamer culture than you'd expect, but it's constantly beat by its own limited imagination. But you kinda look over those baked-in tropes that are in nearly every movie like this. Instead, it’s the funny bits that end up standing out. Rated: 3/5 Aug 16, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Erin P Went too far on all the absurd situations. Just constantly more bad things happening and his parents treated his sister like a total golden child. Fast forwarded through it eventually just to get to the end. Which almost might have saved it but still not a movie I'd ever recommend or watch again. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/18/24 Full Review Jacob B I actually enjoyed this film far more than I was expecting to. I wasn't expecting a disaster, by any means, but I was surprised by just how much of a good time I had watching this film. After all, the premise does sound like it promotes consumerism given that it's basically A Christmas Story but replacing a BB Gun with an NES. But I ended up getting a much better film than that with what felt like a throwback to a bygone era of Christmas films. The child actors all do a good job and their characters are all likeable, the movie's quite funny and the climax revealing what the story Neil Patrick Harris was telling to his daughter was actually about elevated this story from a charming Christmas Story clone to a genuine classic on its own merits. If I had a few criticisms, it would be how the quest for Nintendo gets downright ridiculous with the number of hope spots and some of the adult depictions can be downright cartoonish (forgot what Steve Zahn looked like, so when I saw his name in the credits, it had me thinking "so that's why he reminded me so much of the dad from the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies") but the blow is softened a bit by the fact that NPH is established to be an unreliable narrator and thus, some artistic embellishments are to be expected. All in all, a charming, underrated Christmas classic that lovingly homages the '80s without gunning for the Stranger Things crowd as if they were embarrassed to make something family-oriented. Highly recommended! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/18/24 Full Review Tsend-Ayush D dajgui kino bolosn bsn shuu Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/09/24 Full Review Chad D First, take out the film "A Christmas Story." Replace a Red Ryder BB Gun with a Nintendo, a relatable family with caricatures, a believable time period setting with a poor facsimile, witty narration with boring narration, and you get "8-Bit Christmas." This movie is mid at best. It wins a few points in its final act, but the acting and the writing is cringe inducing. Most of these kids cannot deliver believable lines. The jokes just are not that funny. My wife and I chuckled a few times at best. The film does have a good message, but I don't think the message is good enough to get us to watch the movie again. Oh and the "Power Glove" came out in 1989 and did not work or function as it was featured in this movie. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/07/24 Full Review Alan R A definite must watch for anyone who played video games in the mid 80's. A very relatable Christmas movie for those of us who were there. A worth-while stroll down memory lane. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/07/24 Full Review Aeternus N I liked this movie. I love the characters and their attempts to get the best video game console in the 80s. The ending has a nice little twist as well, which puts things into perspective. It’s on my watch list for every Christmas! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/03/24 Full Review Read all reviews
