Barbara Ellen Times (UK) While not exactly wow, Eminem is solid and credible in a role which could so easily have screeched like chalk across a wet blackboard. Jan 2, 2018 Full Review Joe Morgenstern Wall Street Journal It's easy to like Jimmy Smith as well as to admire him, because Mr. Mathers lets us in, with no sign of calculation, on the kindness, even tenderness, that Jimmy conceals from most of the people around him. Apr 7, 2014 Full Review David Denby The New Yorker In the tradition of Rocky and Fever, the movie is a shrewdly engineered piece of proletarian pop -- a story of triumph -- but, like Eminem's enraged lyrics, 8 Mile has its own kind of vile candor. Apr 7, 2014 Full Review Sean Fallon Film Inquiry Overall, 8 Mile is a very entertaining movie. Its lead performance is still strong away from Eminem’s initial massive fame. May 6, 2023 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews ...a low-key, character-study-like premise thats employed to persistently watchable (and periodically electrifying) effect... Rated: 3/4 Feb 18, 2022 Full Review David Walsh World Socialist Web Site Flashes of genuine rebellion appear in 8 Mile, but they are few and far between. The film's conclusion is thoroughly conformist and predictable. Feb 16, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Blu B Torn between a 4 or 4.5. In a sense this owes a lot to a movie like Purple Rain ebcause it has many of the same problems. The editing isn't bad and the pacing overall is good but man the problems this has are mostly in the first half. It starts out of the gate super strong. The one thing with this is the rap battle scenes are easily the best scenes in this (mainly the start and end) along with scenes of the family drama. But after that for like the next 40 plus minutes this meanders terribly and jumps around so much setting up the scattered plotlines. His girlfriend, new job, being a idiot with the boys, his Mom, the actual rapping, it all feels so unrelated and jumpy. It really drags for a long time and loses all the momentum of the start. However it gets it's act together in the second half and starts putting it all together and the ending is really good. While it does a great job tying in all his struggles in his life to his confidence to battle it just struggles terribly setting it up. Second, everything else though is really well done. The music is really catchy, filled with tons of 90's raps classics that never feel like their trying to be modern and hip but real and fitting for the plot. The cinematography is raw, the setting is super memorable, the close ups and fights are really intense and work great. The on location works great too. Visually its great and the acting is really strong too. Eminem is the standout along with Basinger. Even if the scenes don't tie well together, on their own there great scenes just because the direction, soundtrack and execution is so strong. It really carries this until it gets it's act together. Anyone who is a fan of any actors in this, Hip-Hop, musicals, or urban dramas should check this out. To all films from around this time and beyond that want to try and incorporate rap into your movie without trying to be "Hip" this is how you do it. Be "real" instead. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/02/25 Full Review Ryan G It’s the best hip hop movie ever made all time number 1👍 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/15/25 Full Review Kevin P A very engaging drama loosely based on Eminem's troubled upbringing in the streets and trailer park of Detroit. Good balance between comedy and drama. Eminem does a great job playing himself, with enough humility and vulnerability to make him human, but enough feisty passion to make us root and clap for him when he finally wins. I love his group of friends. They're all hilarious and you really feel the bond between the group. The love interest is really cute, even if the drama feels a bit possessive considering they only had a one-night stand before the confrontation with Wink. But I suppose that's part of B-Rabbit's character arc since that's around his lowest part as he's turning on everyone. The freestyle rap battles are the highlights of the movie, with the best saved for last, followed by the iconic "Lose Yourself" to wrap up the movie. It's not perfect, but it's a damn good musical biopic that avoids that pitfalls and focuses squarely on Eminem’s humble beginnings in Detroit. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/15/25 Full Review Mauricio R Want to see but were to watch? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/10/25 Full Review fred a this was a great movie especially for fans of Eminem and hip hop in general. I don't know how the rating is so low from the audience score, maybe it's for fans who were around from the start.
