What to Know

Critics Consensus

The unerotic sex scenes quickly become tedious to watch, and the lovers lack the personality necessary to make viewers care about them.

Brandon Judell IndieWire Winterbottom proves that nonstop sex intercut with alternative music can be exceedingly boring. Jun 14, 2018 Full Review Zoe Williams London Evening Standard The film is not great. It's not even all that good. And sometimes, it's actively annoying. Jan 12, 2018 Full Review Michael Rechtshaffen The Hollywood Reporter As satisfying viewing experiences go, the film comes up mighty short in terms of story, interesting characters and technical prowess, not to mention a 65-minute running time. Nov 1, 2005 Full Review David N. Butterworth La Movie Boeuf Dear Mr. Winterbottom. Intercutting unsimulated sex scenes with concert footage does not a movie make. Love, David B. Rated: 2/4 Jun 9, 2019 Full Review Shaun Munro What Culture One cannot entirely condemn Winterbottom, because the film is not without its meritorious moments, yet at the same time, 9 Songs doesn't effectively traverse the line of glorified pornography, so much as it narrowly scrapes past it. Rated: 2/5 Jan 3, 2012 Full Review Fernando F. Croce CinePassion It has the rough, penciled-in feel of a sketch, flurries of palpable physicality left along the path of a dissolving relationship Sep 5, 2009 Full Review Read all reviews

O g This is not a good film but it does have some interesting and commendable points. The structure, which flits between the couple at concerts (generally of banal indie-rock bands), having sex and the male character reminiscing from the Antarctic is *close* to working. The low-quality production - the camera is little more than a camcorder - actually fits the style very well. It endows the quotidian aspects (such as shots of cooking) with far more of a sense of the voyeuristic than the intimate ones. Speaking of which, the sex scenes are not an easy watch. There's more eroticism in a dentist's waiting room. So much so I can only assume this is the point. There's also a sense in which the lead actors are miscast (the idea of O'Brien as a geologist in particular). Perhaps the nature of the film made it hard to secure high-quality actors but I wonder if this too is deliberate and making a comment on cookie-cutter casting. This thing certainly captures something of the transitory, uneven and ephemeral nature of relationships and indeed reality. For a few brief moments one can detect a hint of Akerman. The basic seeds were here but ultimately the writing and acting as well as the lurid exhibitionism -whatever intent lay behind it - drag this down. 2.5* Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 08/12/25 Full Review Erick S Muuuito fraco. O roteiro, praticamente não existe, as bandas dão sono e o casal é tão sem sal que dá dó. Mas tem cenas bonitas e olhe lá...
