What to Know

Critics Consensus

The unerotic sex scenes quickly become tedious to watch, and the lovers lack the personality necessary to make viewers care about them.

Winterbottom proves that nonstop sex intercut with alternative music can be exceedingly boring. Go to Full Review

The film is not great. It's not even all that good. And sometimes, it's actively annoying. Go to Full Review

As satisfying viewing experiences go, the film comes up mighty short in terms of story, interesting characters and technical prowess, not to mention a 65-minute running time. Go to Full Review

Dear Mr. Winterbottom. Intercutting unsimulated sex scenes with concert footage does not a movie make. Love, David B. Go to Full Review

One cannot entirely condemn Winterbottom, because the film is not without its meritorious moments, yet at the same time, 9 Songs doesn't effectively traverse the line of glorified pornography, so much as it narrowly scrapes past it. Go to Full Review

It has the rough, penciled-in feel of a sketch, flurries of palpable physicality left along the path of a dissolving relationship Go to Full Review

O g Aug 11 This is not a good film but it does have some interesting and commendable points. The structure, which flits between the couple attending concerts (generally held by the most banal indie-rock bands of the noughties), having sex and the male character reminiscing from the Antarctic is *close* to working. The low-quality production - the camera is little more than a camcorder - actually fits the style very well. It endows the quotidian aspects (such as shots of cooking) with far more of a sense of the voyeuristic than the intimate ones. Speaking of which, the sex scenes are not an easy watch. There's more eroticism in a dentist's waiting room. So much so I can only assume this is the point. There's also a sense in which the lead actors are miscast (the idea of O'Brien as a geologist in particular). Perhaps the nature of the film made it hard to secure high-quality actors but I wonder if this too is deliberate and making a comment on cookie-cutter casting. This thing certainly captures something of the transitory, uneven and ephemeral nature of relationships and indeed reality. For a few brief moments one can detect a hint of Akerman. The basic seeds were here but ultimately the writing and acting as well as the lurid exhibitionism -whatever intent lay behind it - drag this down. 2.5* See more Erick S 02/15/2024 Muuuito fraco.
