Haar's powerful and terribly sad film speaks volumes, not just about life in contemporary Israel, but in the U.S. as well. Go to Full Review

06/22/2015 Very bare-bones documentary on the life of Palestinians who work construction illegally in Israel. Their shed is their hotel. Not great and not limited to this border. See more 07/15/2011 The story repeats over and over again. It is the reality you won't see behind the "holocaust" results. See more 01/15/2011 At times it's so slow (to the point of almost being boring and mundane) and at times it is brilliantly moving ... Worth watching ... For the very reason that it's a tiny window that peaks into a world few of us can imagine ... But need to know exists ... See more 05/17/2009 You can watch the whole film on the PBS website (http://www.pbs.org/pov/pov2008/9starhotel/fullfilm.html), but you can get most of the point just from the 6 minute interview on the DVD. I almost agree with what Louis Proyect has to say about this film: <<"9 Star Hotel" could be the definitive documentary on undocumented workers even though it involves Israelis and Palestinians rather than Mexicans in California or Texas. This should not come as a big surprise since in many ways Israel is a homunculus for the United States, creating a hell on earth for the displaced aboriginal people.>> The problem though is that this film does not really help you analyze those parallels at all. It's rich with the intimate, mundane details of these workers day-to-day lives but gives you very little context for understanding why they are in their situation. I guess that's what you get when you try to make a film about a group of people but can't even speak their language! I think this film is very important because noone else has really documented the situation of Palestinian workers, but it leaves a lot to be desired. See more 01/29/2009 Real Palestinian construction workers illegally cross border into Israel. The young men live under terrible conditions but retain their humanity. Looks to be filmed with handheld camcorder. Not bad, but room for more drama/urgency considering the subject. See more 12/02/2007 An interesting trip along with a group of Palestinian construction workers sneaking into Israel to camp in the hills and look for work. Quite an engaging film.
