A London social worker named Ann Fairlie (Barbara Murray) is assigned to help a group of orphans -- including the harmonica-playing Georgie (Colin Petersen) -- that lives in a poverty-stricken institution located in a rough part of town. Ann quickly forms an attachment to the children, who come from very tragic backgrounds. She is also smitten with Bill Lowther (Max Bygraves), an electrician who works on the property and has a deep bond with the children.
