Joe Leydon Variety Overall effect ranges from richly amusing (Shostakovich is decidedly less than nostalgic as he recalls providing musical accompaniment for silent movies) to sociopolitically astute. Mar 14, 2007 Full Review Jeannette Catsoulis New York Times A documentary grab bag of film clips, diary readings and desultory narration, A Journey of Dmitry Shostakovich peeks at the politics of this controversial composer. Rated: 2.5/5 Mar 14, 2007 Full Review Julia Wallace Village Voice The impressionistic parade of footage [the filmmakers] present is a fascinating spectacle in its own right. Mar 13, 2007 Full Review Urban Cinefile Critics Urban Cinefile By no means a biography or even a particularly revealing snapshot of Dmitri Shostakovich %u2013 despite excerpts from his own letters %u2013 this doco will be of interest only to his fans and to music colleges, museums and archivists Mar 1, 2008 Full Review Louis Proyect rec.arts.movies.reviews Despite its cold war orientation, a valuable introduction to one of the last century's great composers filled with stunning images of a bygone era. Mar 15, 2007 Full Review Maitland McDonagh TV Guide Even the casual viewer can see the marks a troubled life left on Shostakovich in the juxtaposition of a vigorous, owlish young pianist performing in the 1930s and the exhausted old man glumly shaking hands and making speeches four decades later. Audience Member An interesting style of documentary, full of period footage - a glance at the character of one of the greatest of modern composers and artistic struggle in a repressive regime. Could have focused more on the rebellious subtext of his compositions, but all in all, an enjoyable watch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Read all reviews
