Luis I A beautiful film about teenage love, told with minimal dialogue yet rich in emotion. The movie doesn’t rely on words to convey its feelings; instead, it effectively uses camera work and music to chart the journey of its two central characters; from their first meeting to their growing closeness and intimacy. The film explores several thematic contrasts: the innocence, curiosity, and purity of young love set against the complex, awkward world of adults and their societal and material concerns; a family navigating a complicated and somewhat melancholic city life versus the simplicity and warmth of life in the countryside. Beyond being a portrait of young romance, the film also serves as a reflection on Swedish society, offering a subtle yet hopeful perspective. Structurally, the film loosely follows a three-act format, particularly in the first half. While it lacks a strong midpoint, there is a noticeable shift in setting for the final act, giving the story a sense of progression. The only technical shortcoming is the sound quality, which may be a result of the film technology available in Sweden at the time. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it can be noticeable at times. Not everyone will be drawn to a Swedish-language film with a slow-paced and unconventional narrative structure, but for those willing to engage with it, this film offers a beautifully simple yet profound cinematic experience, one that lingers in the mind and invites reflection. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/13/25 Full Review isla s This is a somewhat charming and thoughtful watch I suppose on one level, although it didn't really particularly appeal to me personally. The young characters are nice enough but the plot isn't quite solid enough. There is the threat of domestic violence hanging over the parents and its another quite arty film with a light musical touch but it didn't entirely sit well with me. I wouldn't particularly recommend it, no. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Absolutely adorable. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Completely charming and slyly comic portrait of puppy love in 1970s Sweden. Anyone will identify with the fumbling attraction between 15 year-old biker Pär and his 13 year-old amour, Annika. Theirs is a Romeo and Juliet romance, but as if Mike Leigh was in charge of an Eric Rohmer script. The older adults offer a warning note of how madness, disappointment and compromise conspire to curdle young ardour. Beautifully photographed with a lovely soundtrack. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member 7.3/10, my review: http://wp.me/p1eXom-2pV Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member Roy Andersson's celebrated social criticism signature. To me, however, just too many unwanted materials dragging the film down. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Read all reviews
