BRizz 2 A Box for Rob (also known as The Box Cutter) is a 2012 indie thriller centered around a serial killer. While the premise holds promise, the execution falls short in several areas, making it difficult to stay fully engaged throughout the film. The direction showed potential—the filmmaker clearly had a vision, especially with the back-and-forth tension between the suspect and those investigating. However, the screenplay feels overwritten. Scenes are packed with excessive dialogue that ultimately drags down the pacing. Unless the dialogue is absolutely necessary to push the story forward, it ends up feeling more like filler than substance. That’s a recurring issue I find with many indie thrillers: the overuse of “table talk.” A film doesn’t always need high-budget action, but it does need movement—whether it’s physical, emotional, or narrative. Unfortunately, much of A Box for Rob plays out in static conversations, which can lose the audience fast. The performances from the actors were decent for what they were given, but the rapid, disjointed flashbacks didn’t help the storytelling. Instead of immersing the viewer, they felt like quick edits meant to give exposition without much emotional weight or clarity. At times, they were more confusing than helpful. Ultimately, A Box for Rob is a film that had the bones of a good psychological thriller but struggled with its structure and execution. When making a movie—especially one that hinges on mystery or suspense—it’s crucial to balance dialogue, visual storytelling, and pacing. This one, unfortunately, leaned too far into conversation and not enough into action or atmosphere. It’s clear the filmmakers were trying to create something memorable, but they missed the mark when it came to truly capturing and holding the audience’s attention.
