Ben Sachs Chicago Reader Throughout Wang demonstrates he's a gifted, idiosyncratic director of actors. Mar 24, 2020 Full Review Josh Kupecki Austin Chronicle It's all a very heady stew, and the fact that this is just the beginning sometimes makes it feel like a slog. Yet there are moments that shine so bright - where you see what Wang is working at - that they make the film hum. Rated: 3/5 Dec 27, 2018 Full Review Owen Gleiberman Variety It's as if Eric Rohmer had made a Christopher Guest film - "Waiting for Guffman" recast as an ardent inquiry into what small-town American life has become. Oct 27, 2018 Full Review CJ Sheu Critics at Large This is such a rich film that despite this review's length, I can only hit the highlights. Jun 30, 2020 Full Review Caden Mark Gardner Hyperallergic A smart film that showcases Wang's willingness to experiment and take risks, it is also incredibly personal to him. Feb 28, 2020 Full Review Mattie Lucas From the Front Row Like a high wire act without an act, the lack of cuts putting emphasis on the performers and what they're saying rather than directorial style. Rated: 3.5/4 Jun 3, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

dave d Writer and director Patrick Wang had a busy 2018 with three films released (this in two parts & The Grief of Others) and while critics have lauded those three pictures, I have rather not enjoyed them at all. I just didn't get 'The Bread Factory' (Part One), but I'll watch the second part tomorrow and hopefully it will all come together. It's great seeing Tyne Daly in a meaty role. The cast here is pretty terrific, for a movie that to my mind didn't make sense. If we're using metaphors why do they have to be clear as mud? Final Score: 3.7/10 Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review mike c My wife, who is smarter than I am, stopped watching after 30 minutes. I watched all four hours of this. I was not rewarded. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member It was pretty hilarious, I think it's worth your time. Newsflash weirdos who spend all their time 1-starring everything, this movie is making fun of pretentious films. It's supposed to be stupid and absurd. I guarantee most of the people who are shitting on it here, didn't watch it and just assumed it was a "pretentious indie movie" because of the title. You can taste irony that has been completely lost on some of these people. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review nefasto r A minimalist, indie film that carries a little universe with it. It might not be a very mind-blowing universe, but is cute and interesting enough to convince me to watch part 2. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Overrated! Slow moving. Watched Part One, forget Part Two Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Do not rely solely in the critics. The film is so basically done that resembles a high school project, with terrible acting, terrible editing, so boring that it makes me wonder if the critics watched an entirely different version or they were just paid to write about it. And they even dared to make a second part!! No thanks, there are better films out there to invest my time in. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Read all reviews
