Cath Clarke Guardian It’s as if director Warren Fischer has forgotten to write jokes in his script. No one says anything remotely humorous; instead there’s just a parade of lowest-common-denominator gags... Rated: 2/5 May 14, 2024 Full Review Jennie Kermode Eye for Film We watch the characters scampering around, going through the motions in a familiar way, but the laughs are few and far between, the tension that one would expect of a farce curiously absent. Rated: 2/5 Jun 10, 2024 Full Review Jordan Bond Film Threat A Family Affair has the heart but could do with a few more laughs though what humour is here is funny. Rated: 6.5/10 May 22, 2024 Full Review Mary Kassel Screen Rant Starring British comedian Joe Wilkinson, A Family Affair has a few funny moments, but they don't make up for the weak plot & characters. Rated: 2/5 May 20, 2024 Full Review Joe Muldoon Battle Royale With Cheese A Family Affair is the culmination of decades of absurdist comedy, and its execution is a ridiculous set of events that lacks explosive consequences but is overflowing with delicious drama. Shelby P Joey King was the only bit of com in this rom-com for me. No chemistry between efron and kidman. The overdone plastic surgery and fillers left me more distracted than able to even concentrate on the story line sadly. Efron apparently had major reconstructive jaw surgery due to an accident a few years ago, but kidman looked sickly with stringy hair. It was hard to watch. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/07/24 Full Review Toby H This makes me cringe for Nicole Kidman and Kathy Bates. I suppose this movie will appeal to undiscriminating prepubescents and diehard Zac Efron fans (basically, think of anyone whose bedroom has posters of both Justin Bieber and unicorns on display); but it will be a disappointment for Nicole Kidman fans. In the first 5 minutes I'd already realized that the direction was amateurish, the editing was clumsy, and the juvenile writing was on par with a bad after-school special. But I held on long enough for Ms. Kidman to make her entrance. After she spoke I instantly realized that she wasn't actually going to be able to elevate the sophomoric material (truly, "sophomoric" is too kind, but I don't believe "freshmanic" is actually a word). Yet I still couldn't look away. It's the lure of the abominable. It's like trying to look away from a train wreck, but a train wreck would actually add much needed production value to this film. I'd say A Family Affair is like a Hallmark movie, but I'm afraid Hallmark would sue me for libel. Let's put it this way: The writer/director "treats" us to a musical montage in which Efron and Kidman dance around and giggle and try on different colorful costumes and hats. Say... no... more. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/06/24 Full Review Kim H this is the 2nd movie I have watched with Zac Efron. He is just a pretty boy with very limited acting skills. Just a terrible script, poorly acted and poorly directed. Terrible. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/01/24 Full Review Read all reviews
