Critics Consensus

Aside from a few chuckles and Simon Pegg's reliably affable screen presence, A Fantastic Fear of Everything has embarrassingly little to offer.

Tasha Robinson The Dissolve [A Fantastic Fear of Everything] leaps all over the place narratively and conceptually, servicing the comedy of every individual scene without considering or linking the others. Rated: 2.5/5 Feb 13, 2014 Full Review Calum Marsh Village Voice For all its comic panache, A Fantastic Fear of Everything too often feels forced rather than funny - the strain evident in the setup is rarely worth the payoff, and the result simply proves exhausting. Feb 11, 2014 Full Review Ian Buckwalter NPR The effect eventually becomes that of about a dozen story pitches all strung together. Any one of them might have the potential for greatness in isolation. Try to mash them up into one movie, though, and much like Jack, they fall to pieces. Rated: 4/10 Feb 6, 2014 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The viewer is torn between the admirable high-energy presentation and how incongruous it all seems when reflected upon as a whole. Rated: 2/4 Aug 18, 2022 Full Review Frank Ochieng SF Crowsnest A Fantastic Fear Of Everything is a cockeyed and chewy treat for a Pegg-related vehicle that gleefully registers on the side of unsettling cheekiness. Rated: 2.5/4 Nov 11, 2018 Full Review Sarah Gopaul Digital Journal The script is packed with humor only someone like Pegg could pull off. Oct 20, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews

Taylor I This movie was extremely creepy and in my opinion really well done. It was pretty trippy and had a lot of very intense moments peppered with comedic moments that in my opinion didn't pull away from the creep factor of the movie. The acting was superb and while a lot of it felt very disjointed, it all came together to form a coherent story that was really interesting to watch through. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/22/24 Full Review wayne k Despite the presence of Simon Pegg in the lead role, AFFOE sees to have been completely forgotten by the moviegoing public. I only came across it when it popped up on an underrated/overlooked films list, and the premise intrigued me. In the first 2 acts, I feel like the film really delivered. We follow an author who's researching murders and murderers, subjects he's quickly become obsessed with, and now fears for his life as he imagines himself becoming a potential victim. Its full of zany antics and witty narration, and Pegg's energetic performance really sells it. It's also fun when it becomes a psychodrama about our lead overcoming a childhood fear of, of all things, a laundrette, where, once again, Pegg's gift for physical comedy shines. The 3rd act, which becomes a serial killer captive story, isn't bad, but its far less entertaining than the ones that came before it, and at times it feels like the film is coming to a dead stop. It does lead to a believable change in our lead, one which manages to be both amusing and realistic at the same time. I liked its references to famous murders of the Victorian era, and the way its staged makes it feel like a horror film without losing its comedic touches. I won't say that it's a new cult classic that'll be celebrated and replayed for years to come, but I will say that's it's a very funny movie with a great central performance and some real artistic flair. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Shioka O This is wacky, but I personally enjoyed so much. Maybe because I always stand for films featuring struggling artist and writers as such. Lead role by Simon Pegg worked in here. Good cinematography set in London is a huge plus. Hedgehog named Brian is my favourite. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/03/22 Full Review Audience Member The three phases of the film are almost better separately than they are together, but I'm a sucker for an animated hedgehog. If you're a Simon Pegg completist, this will probably be towards the middle of your ranked list. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member This film is wicked ! Unique, funny and with quality cinematography and acting **** Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Bad watch, probably won't watch again, and can't recommend unless you're ona Simon Pegg binge or an eccentric writer. I like Simon Pegg, but this doesn't feel like one of his movies, and maybe that was the point. It has an interesting premise, and maybe I wasn't in the right frame of mind for the movie, but I don't find the paranoia and mental afflictions of the character funny: I don't even feel they're presented as jokes. There is some heavily worked situational comedy, but the movie doesn't feel like a comedy itself. Long story short: it was kind of a depressing watch with some mildy interesting psychology to it and rather little criminology. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Read all reviews
