Ben Sachs Chicago Reader The unconventional narrative structure seems more beguiling the more you think about it - this is a film designed to expand in your memory. Mar 26, 2020 Full Review Kristen Lopez Culturess Slow and baffling at times, A Ghost Story follows you, not unlike the undead spirit within its frame. Nov 20, 2017 Full Review Chris Barton Los Angeles Times The film stubbornly refuses to connect with its deeper themes because of a vague, self-consciously arty structure and a pace so deliberate it approaches a stand-still. Oct 21, 2017 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson This is a wholly original film that takes preparation, patience, absorption, and reflection that some, or even many, may not be ready for. Rated: 3/5 Oct 14, 2024 Full Review JD Duran InSession Film A Ghost Story is one of the most unique films I’ve ever seen. The gimmick of the bed sheet with the holes cut out for eyes could have come off as silly, but it never does thanks to the deft hands of David Lowery. Aug 8, 2024 Full Review Brendan Cassidy InSession Film For its sheer minimalistic approach, the film is a technical marvel in its own way. Rated: A+ Jul 1, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Megan B I liked the meditation on love and life Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/15/24 Full Review Mike P So boring and slow. Snoozefest Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/25 Full Review Kevin P A mesmerizing paranormal drama that puts you in a hypnotic trance with its brilliant visual storytelling as you follow the lingering silent afterlife of the ghost of our main protagonist after he perishes away. He holds his house and wife dearly, and is emotionally unable to let them go, even after his wife leaves and moves on herself. The Charlie Brown blanket ghost looks silly at first, but quickly becomes tragic in its dehumanizing of the protagonist's draining emotions and dwindling presence & legacy in the present day, as he slowly becomes more forgotten to time. You understand how a "haunting" could happen, as decades of change and isolation prod him to lash out at a world that can't acknowledge his perpetuated existence. The party scene has a really thought-provoking monologuing about the inevitable mortality of human legacy, spacing it out to even the faintest of reoccurring ideas like basic tunes hummed out by our most distant descendants who may just be lucky enough to survive on an extraterrestrial colony eons after Earth's fate to be swallowed up by the sun. The movie might be too slow for some viewers (that pie scene with Rooney Mara is basically the litmus test for casual viewers), but i personally loved how real and drawn out the Afterlife felt. An empty, mysterious, and directionless sensation where you practically mourn your own life and legacy as you grow more powerless to interact with the world you're still granted access to walk across. The brevity of the world and how everything changes eventually, from pets, to people, to residences, to buildings, to landscapes, to the very planets and structures of the galaxy. It's a thought-provoking film, and an underrated gen of A24 in my book. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/25 Full Review SkyRo P Recently, I decided to check out a horror film titled "A Ghost Story," which was part of the Erie series available on the Max network. The movie had been released in theaters in 2024, but it was only screened for a mere weekend before vanishing from the big screen. As I watched, it quickly became clear why it didn’t last long in theaters. The film was a complete disaster—dull, poorly directed, and the cinematography was so poorly executed that I often found myself zoning out, completely forgetting I was even watching a movie. The plot was nonsensical, and the characters seemed oblivious to the ghost in a sheet that was right in front of them. They would walk right past it or even sit down next to it without a hint of recognition, which made the whole experience even more frustrating. I felt like I had wasted an hour and 33 minutes of my life. I wouldn’t recommend this film to anyone; in fact, I strongly advise steering clear of it altogether. Originally released in 2017, the film was brought back for a Halloween re-release, likely in an attempt to cash in on the holiday. Although it managed to pull in $2 million on a $100,000 budget, it’s painfully obvious that the budget reflected the film’s poor quality. What amazes me is that Casey Affleck, an Oscar-winning actor, starred in this film. I can't help but wonder what led him to take on such a lackluster project—perhaps it was the aftermath of the scandals he faced that prompted him to seek out any work available. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/15/25 Full Review Ann P No. Now come on. She was eating that pie for so long I thought I was in a time warp! I know it’s “artsy” but it should really have been a comedy! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/05/25 Full Review Audience Member I tried to give it a fair chance but it’s just really not very good. It’s slow and boring.
