Impetuous and restless art student Sabine (Béatrice Romand) is tired of her dead-end job and her married boyfriend, Simon (Féodor Atkine), so she drops both of them. Then, through her pal Clarisse (Arielle Dombasle), she meets Edmond (André Dussollier), an attorney 10 years her senior. Immediately, she decides marriage is just the change she needs, and that Edmond is the perfect candidate for a husband. And so begins her relentless pursuit of matrimony, much to Edmond's chagrin.

Glenn Kenny Video Review Rohmer, like Jean Renoir, doesn’t see things in purely black-and-white terms, and the fun of his movies is in how he shows each of his characters from a number of different angles, shifting our sympathies subtly with nearly every shot. Rated: 3/4 Aug 5, 2022 Full Review Tom Milne Sight & Sound It was perhaps high time that one of the delightful women who have led Rohmer's heroes such a teasing dance was put in her place. Mar 16, 2020 Full Review Bruce McCabe Boston Globe Le Beau Mariage never really seems to get outside the groove that Rohmer sets it in. Even for Rohmer, a director with an indirect style and approach, the film is too oblique. Apr 27, 2018 Full Review Yasser Medina Cinefilia I find the film, considered the second in his 'Comedies and Proverbs', bland and disappointing when Rohmer repeatedly addresses issues related to whims, indecision and marriage. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 5/10 Jan 29, 2021 Full Review Luis Fernando Galván En Filme We can laugh at Sabine's candor and naive attempts at social climbing, but her ultimate fate draws our sympathies. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 3/5 Oct 22, 2020 Full Review Diego Galán El Pais (Spain) The fantasies of the protagonist are transformed into subjective versions of what the audience contemplates from the outside. The contrast elicits laughter and even solidarity. [Full Review in Spanish] Aug 26, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member #2 in Rohmer's comedies & proverbs Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member A bloody nightmare of a woman wants to marry the first bachelor she comes across and it all ends in misery. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member More interesting and with more action than some of the other entries in the "Comedies et Proverbes" series (at least that I've seen). Can't say I particularly liked it. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Headstrong, naive woman decides to get married, then meets a man she wants to pursue in this comfortably talky French drama. Slight but at times quite soulful. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member This was perfectly satisfactory stuff. I have never seen a Rohmer film before and thought this was averagely interesting. I particularly liked the electropop on the soundtrack which I certainly didn't suspect, and also admired the nicely reflective and optimistic ending. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member Can Rohmer do no wrong?? Seemingly banal but so painfully, uncomfortably compelling and true. And Beatrice is always such a charm to watch. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Read all reviews
