Dave S If you’re up for a dose of avant garde weirdness, check out A Hotel Called Memory. The story is pretty standard – a woman leaves her husband in Lagos and travels to Zanzibar and Cape Town on a journey of self-discovery. What makes the movie so unique are the visuals and the sound. For starters, there is no dialogue, leading one to believe that either a) the director was trying to develop a new cinematic language, or b) the sound guy had his mike and boom stolen from his truck the night before the shoot. The visuals, often beautiful, are also often irritating. The depth of field is so narrow in some shots that the eyebrows are in focus but the hairline is a blur. In other shots, some sort of weird-ass lens is used where, horizontally, only the middle third of the screen is in focus – either that, or the cameraman smeared Vaseline on the lens to get the same effect. It’s interesting to watch at times, but it is equally frustrating. Mercifully, it’s less than an hour long. At the end I was left with more questions than answers unfortunately…it was all very confusing. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/29/24 Full Review Read all reviews
