Audience Member A sobering look at issues Asian Americans regularly face in Hollywood: "A Leading Man" illustrates the struggles with the bamboo ceiling that Asian Americans have to face on a regular basis, especially in Hollywood, which is illustrative of other parts of society, like one's social life. I'm not a film critic, but I did find all of the actor's acting very realistic, to the point where characters that I felt what GQ Qi (main character) seemed to feel. This may be because of how well Steven J. Kung captures part of the Asian American experience and this simply reminds me of my own experiences. However, while I did feel that the film was slightly repetitive in its depiction of Hollywood's treatment of Asian Americans, I also kept in mind that it was par for the course, given that the Bamboo Ceiling appeared to be focus of the film. To be more specific, the stereotype is the idea of Asian Americans being stereotyped as subservient and aloof, leading your average American (who may only exposed to certain races through television and Hollywood's lenses) to think that Asian American men can't be attractive, leading men. All in all, this film was a delight to see and I definitely recommend you take a look at "A Leading Man". Four stars. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member This seem like a special interest movie. In many ways it is. This film is, however, way beyond a simple special interest movie. I am afraid it will be treated as one. But for anyone who watched it and can detach themselves from "Hollywood tradition", this movie should be considered a very good one. The acting, directing and script are all impressive. I do think some of the character's struggle indeed can be better described and made more clear. Viewers can still understand it, but it felt a bit unnecessarily hard. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member I liked it. It's entertaining and a thinker. An American actor is just trying to make it in Hollywood and make his Chinese American family proud. While struggling against stereotypes imposed on him by Hollywood and his family, he simultaneously perpetuates stereotypes associated with Hollywood actors and American male twenty somethings.
