Critics Consensus

Tonally jumbled and conceptually ill-advised, A Long Way Down bungles its source material and wastes a talented cast.

Jason Clark Entertainment Weekly The movie criminally wastes Sam Neill and Rosamund Pike in barely there supporting roles, and the picture has exactly two tones: grim and gooey. They do not coexist harmoniously. Rated: C Dec 2, 2014 Full Review Steven Rea Philadelphia Inquirer Whatever the intent of the filmmakers, a story that hinges on existential despair requires at least a modicum of emotional credulity. Rated: 1.5/4 Jul 25, 2014 Full Review Mick LaSalle San Francisco Chronicle As British comedy sometimes will, "A Long Way Down" has an occasional attack of the cutes, but the actors' commitment keeps the movie on the plus side. Rated: 3/4 Jul 17, 2014 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com Butchering its Nick Hornby based source material, the end result is an aggravating chore to sit through. Rated: 0.5/5 Aug 30, 2019 Full Review Patrick Taylor One Room With A View Aside from a gloriously entertaining performance from Imogen Poots, A Long Way Down, though entertaining at times, is somewhat misjudged and profoundly forgettable. Rated: 3/5 Jun 17, 2019 Full Review Asia Frey Lagniappe (Mobile, AL) A life of its own is exactly what this slight and silly film lacks. You keep waiting for the story to dig in, but everyone just skitters over the surface. Revelations, when they are made, are lame. Characterization is willy-nilly. Iamwhoi M I don't hate the movie like a lot of people do. For me, it's a little bit of a different kind of film, being a comedy that's not dark, but still centered around suicide. I found it to be fine, helped by a great cast; and, in the end, everything was fine. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/27/24 Full Review Руслан Г легкий фільм, перегляд якого подарував мені приємні емоції! Отримав задоволення від гри акторів Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/12/24 Full Review Tim M Unable to give the serious issue at its center the dramatic heft it deserves, A Long Way Down falls well short of its potential. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/01/24 Full Review Rachel O I'm Jesse, the pretty blonde whose a little bit loud, crazy, and blunt.....and will never be good enough for the dude she loves. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/22/23 Full Review Alice B This movie proves that having big names doesn't translate to a great film. Even with the ineffable talents of Toni Collette, Sam Neill, Rosamund Pike and Pierce Brosnan, the plot feels contrived and jerky. There are some moments that genuinely teeter on the edge of meaning and begin to explore the characters feelings beyond surface level, and I wanted to lean through the screen and give them a good shove over that edge (no pun intended). Unfortunately those moments are very few and far between, and what fills the gaps is a whole lot of trivialising mental ill health, unrealistically portrayals of suicidal people and problems being magically solved and tied up in a neat bow. I am not even going to discuss the fact that we are supposed to feel sympathy for a 50 year old man who has been to prison for sleeping with a 15 year old. The only character that is really intriguing (until the final scene) is JJ, played by Aaron Paul. His problems aren't easily summed up or solved and his character felt more complicated and ultimately more real than any other. This was helped along by some excellent acting on Paul's part. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/15/23 Full Review meredith w It wasn't the best Nick Hornby novel and the film translates this. Its story has potential as on New Year's Eve in London, four strangers find themselves on the roof of a building known for suicides. However, it is a pretty clichéd exploration and predictable ending, despite its star cast, which includes Pierce Bronson, Toni Collette and Aaron Paul.
