Critics Consensus

Though it lacks moviemaking polish, A Man Named Pearl is redeemed by the interest -- and uplift -- generated by its subject.

Audience Member Awesome. Funny and touching. Great way to spend an hour and eighteen minutes. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Inspirational documentary about Pearl Fryar that shows how far passion, hard work, and positive thinking will get you. Impressive what he accomplished without formal training/education, and furthermore he doesn't use pesticides (he uses trenching) nor use irrigation. He continues to change the small town community he lives in and touch the lives of people everywhere. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member This film is a captivating combination of the story of a brilliant self-taught artist, an embarrasing example of the racism that still exists in this country, and a tourism advertisement for Bishopville, South Carolina. Pearl Fryar's story, however, is well worth suffering through the other stuff. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member Loved this little documentary. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member A mediocre documentary, but a remarkable man. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member The power of L-O-V-E! Inspiring. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Read all reviews
