Though it lacks moviemaking polish, A Man Named Pearl is redeemed by the interest -- and uplift -- generated by its subject.

In its own modest fashion, the film does capture a sense of the intuitive craftsmanship, pride and determination that drive the self-taught artist. Go to Full Review

09/22/2013 Awesome. Funny and touching. Great way to spend an hour and eighteen minutes. See more 09/12/2012 Inspirational documentary about Pearl Fryar that shows how far passion, hard work, and positive thinking will get you. Impressive what he accomplished without formal training/education, and furthermore he doesn't use pesticides (he uses trenching) nor use irrigation. He continues to change the small town community he lives in and touch the lives of people everywhere. See more 12/13/2011 This film is a captivating combination of the story of a brilliant self-taught artist, an embarrasing example of the racism that still exists in this country, and a tourism advertisement for Bishopville, South Carolina. Pearl Fryar's story, however, is well worth suffering through the other stuff. See more 12/09/2011 Loved this little documentary. See more 09/13/2011 A mediocre documentary, but a remarkable man.
