Robert Daniels indieWire The script to “A Man of Reason” too often relies on bare-bone archetypes over deeply etched characters. Rated: C Sep 14, 2022 Full Review Andy Klein FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) A very solid action film. Jul 13, 2024 Full Review Roger Moore Movie Nation The action beats are superb, the supporting cast properly colorful and mostly hateful. It’s the story and the drab archetypal lead character which let it down. Rated: 2/4 Jul 11, 2024 Full Review Liz Braun Original Cin Brilliant though the action scenes are, shouldn’t one be watching them from the edge of one’s seat? You’ll be entertained. What you won’t be is transported, and that’s kind of the goal. Rated: B Jul 3, 2024 Full Review Whang Yee Ling The Straits Times (Singapore) This thrill-free crime thriller is a dud. Rated: 2/5 Sep 7, 2023 Full Review Lucas Moore JVS Media & Productions/Team JVS A Man of Reason is an action thriller with little to no action or thrilling moments. You feel the star power and directing talent of Jung Woo-sung but with a story that doesn't connect it becomes an unnecessary mess of a movie. Rated: D Aug 2, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Carol S I especially liked this well cast and stylish Korean action thriller for its engaging and off beat characters including a couple of strong female leads. Kim Nam-Gil brings laughs to his twisted psycho-killer villain which makes him an effective foil to the stoic hero. He's an Asian version of Batman's Joker. Jung Woo-Sung frames his action sequences with such an assured and arresting eye that they are almost beautiful. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/06/24 Full Review Nathan H It does not have a high body count, but it has explosions, car chases, gun fights, etc., and most everything I came for was satisfied, so I'm not sure why the critics are such haters. The plot is not deep, but the side characters are surprisingly distinct and fleshed out, and it's a fun ride. It's in the vein of "The Man from Nowhere" or "The Ganster, the Cop, and the Devil" albeit a small and understated plot, with the slick style of "Shiri" and atmosphere of "Drive" (2011), following a man on a dark quest, with a handful of twists. The writing is fine, the dialogue is fine; it's a lo-fi, subdued thriller with a simple plot that showcases everything other than the writing, which itself is actually fine. Use of props is very good, with some great use of color, architecture, and some nice cinemographic shots. I don't know why the critics are panning this, so far, because it's quite a lot better than most action-genre fluff that comes out of Hollywood.
