Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity doesn't just help you craft, it's essential to one's survival! Four misfits--Garrett "The Garbage Man" Garrison (Jason Momoa), Henry (Sebastian Eugene Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers) and Dawn (Danielle Brooks)--find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they'll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Jack Black). Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative... the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Ostensibly a film about celebrating creativity, A Minecraft Movie provides a colorful sandbox for Jack Black and Jason Momoa to amusingly romp around in a story curiously constructed from conventional building blocks.

Beyond being a fertile meme-factory, A Minecraft Movie proves how much fun two men with beards can bring to the sandbox.

David Sims The Atlantic The film’s anarchy might reflect a lot of younger players’ first experience with Minecraft, where destruction can be just as fun as creation. Missing on the big screen, meanwhile, is the odd, remote atmosphere that drew me in. Apr 15, 2025 Full Review Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com “A Minecraft Movie” is quirky and goofy enough to make one wish it held together better overall, but it’s also a likable venture. Rated: 2.5/4 Apr 14, 2025 Full Review Mark Kermode Kermode and Mayo's Take (YouTube) Jack Black and Jason Momoa together, they're okay; so it's perfectly unremarkable. Apr 11, 2025 Full Review John Serba Decider I admit to laughing out loud several times, at Coolidge’s loony line readings, and the moment when Black starts singing unprompted and Myers rolls her eyes and sighs like, oh god, not this again. May 16, 2025 Full Review Mini Anthikad-Chhibber The Hindu While it might be slightly shrieky, this videogame adaptation, with its bright, buzzy palate and merry band of misfits, is a goofy way to pass time May 16, 2025 Full Review Chris McCoy Memphis Flyer The real star of the show, and the only thing that makes A Minecraft Movie something other than an wildly successful corporate branding exercise, is Jack Black as Steve, one of the skins players can choose to represent themselves on the map. Brandi Candi I love how Jason momoa and Jack black were so stupid awesome together. Love the adult sense of humor so us adults didn't fall asleep as we thought we were going to do before seeing the movie. I disliked how my kids kept asking for more food. Crazy expensive food like wtf we snuck a whole grocery store in for yall. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/23/25 Full Review Michelle Minecraft was amazing! Jason Mamoa & Jack Black were hilarious. It took the game and brought it to life! My kids loved it so much we watched it 2 times. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/23/25 Full Review Mom of 4 For someone who doesnt know about the game at all I was just as entertained as my children!! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/23/25 Full Review Mrflorida Honestly, I kinda enjoyed this film. Thought it was pretty good. I mean it’s not the best film per se like the acting kind of feels like watching a Nickelodeon live action sitcom and the jokes are pretty cheesy, but it’s basically that type of film where it’s so bad it’s actually pretty fun to watch and I could definitely see that a lot of the actors were actually having a lot of fun in the movie, especially Jack Black himself and while I still think the choice of making it a live action CGI film was questionable at best. I feel like the CGI in this is actually overhated. I mean it does look ugly in some places. But you could definitely tell that they wanted to be faithful to the spirit of the game as possible, especially when you see the setting all in all yeah this film is pretty bad but it’s more like a so bad it’s good type of film and if you’re a Minecraft fan, you can check it out to give it a go Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/22/25 Full Review Leo It’s an okay movie. I’ve never played the game but am familiar with some of the references in the movie. There were a handful of funny moments, but overall watching once is enough. The special effects were great, but the story and plot were paper thin. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/22/25 Full Review Adrian Roman It was my favorite video-game adaption better Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/22/25 Full Review Read all reviews
