Claudia Puig FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) A provocative and engrossing psychological character study. Oct 9, 2024 Full Review Dennis Harvey Variety Though not a knockout, the director’s return affirms her knack for intelligent adult drama, here hinging on issues of medical ethics and bureaucracy. Sep 23, 2024 Full Review David Rooney Hollywood Reporter While the movie might be too unwaveringly downbeat in tone for some audiences, A Mistake functions as both an empathetic character study and a thoughtful examination of professional ethics, culpability and forgiveness... Jun 10, 2024 Full Review James Croot Stuff.co.nz It’s not that this is a cinematic misadventure, more it never gets out of second-gear, covering similar thematic ground to the brilliant This is Going to Hurt, but without reaching anywhere near the emotional heights – or devastation – that delivered. Rated: 3/5 Oct 14, 2024 Full Review Joel Copling Spectrum Culture Medical drama A Mistake has an emotionally compelling story but is full of glaringly manipulative plot contrivances. Sep 24, 2024 Full Review Brian Farvour The Playlist As a showcase for the talent that is Elizabeth Banks, in addition to its existence as a thought-provoking exploration of the field of medicine and the human side of patient care, it’s an undeniable victory. AR acting was outstanding and the topic riveting Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/29/24 Full Review Duane The main plot seemed like it should be the subplot to another issue in the movie OR, there should be something else going on. It just seemed like it had a lot of dead space. The acting and actors showed up though, no doubt. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/23/24 Full Review When is the jig up? Was a brooding, angst filled movie - unfortunately did paint a fairly true picture of hospital administrators in many areas of the world (they represent the company, not the worker bees). No action shots, not bloody shoot outs, just day to day reality in healthcare. A definite glimpse into the future of healthcare in the US (everyone has a time limit, there is only so much money to go around, hard choices to be made - does this person live or does this individual let go with dignity, to die). Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/22/24 Full Review Les N Very good. I didn't know that lady could act that well. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/21/24 Full Review Andrei D Banks gives it a lot and there's enough drama here for some serious acting, even if the movie moves in pretty predictable ways Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/11/24 Full Review Trina B IN A NUTSHELL: The story is about a gifted surgeon whose life is thrown into disarray when a patient she works on dies. Blame is tossed around and quickly centers on her. The film was directed by Christine Jeffs, who also co-produced it and co-wrote it. The movie is not based on a true story, but on a novel written by Carl Shuker. This movie piqued my interest because I used to teach at a nursing college. THINGS I LIKED: I like Elizabeth Banks in a lot of her movies, but not all of them. It’s a little bit hit or miss for me. Over the years, she has been involved in a variety of genres, including comedy, horror, and drama. I hadn’t seen Simon McBurney in anything recently, so I enjoyed his performance. All of the cast members did a good job, including Mickey Sumner, Fern Sutherland, Joel Tobeck, and Richard Crouchley. The film does a great job exploring all sides of these medical issues. For example, all patients would want transparency in surgeon performance, but wouldn’t be happy with the natural consequence of that, which would be many surgeons would leave the industry or move to another state or country where their records are readily available for public consumption. There’s an interesting element of the film that shows the surgeon cutting through a wall in her house. She doesn’t like what she finds, which is somewhat of a parallel to opening up the pandora’s box of medical ethics. THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE: Elizabeth Banks’ accent was terrible and super distracting. I wonder why she was cast in this role. Star power, I guess. What’s weird is that quite a few others in the cast didn’t have the classic Kiwi accent either. The story is definitely depressing and heartbreaking. The very last screenshots went on way too long. TIPS FOR PARENTS: We see a lot of bloody body parts during a surgery. A lesbian couple is featured. Some profanity, including F-bombs. Elizabeth Banks’ character writes an F-bomb on a whiteboard for all to see. Kids will be extremely bored. We see a woman wearing a T-shirt and only her underwear. We see a dog being put to sleep after an accident. To see my full review, go to my Movie Review Mom YouTube channel!
