"A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master" is by far the best of the series, a superior horror picture that balances wit and gore with imagination and intelligence. Go to Full Review

Surprisingly watchable for the third sequel and despite its general predictability it's entertainingly inventive. Go to Full Review

The horror elements have been softened, and the humour increased: while the result is a more mainstream entertainment it does feel like something more potent has been lost in return. Go to Full Review

The embrace of inherent absurdity might have worked for the last installment, but it doesn't work here, as it doubles down on anything even remotely horrific in the promising franchise. Go to Full Review

Marlin puts a fresh spin on the recurring nightmare cliché and there's a marvellous scene where Wilcox is flung into the on-screen action from a cinema balcony. Go to Full Review

Wayne K 3d In serious competition with part 3 for the most 80s film in the series, The Dream Master is, in my opinion, one of the better sequels. The writing might be cheesy, a fact not helped by much of the cast’s delivery, but it gives Freddy Kreuger plenty to do, a bunch of quips to make without completely undermining his scare factor, and it does a lot to make it characters relatable. The practical effects look great, especially in the climax where Freddy is torn apart by the souls of his victims. It offers a poor excuse for why Kreuger himself is ‘alive’ again, and an ending teaser that, if anything, is even worse. There’s no point in films like this pretending the franchise is going to end if it’s still printing money. It might not match the raw power of the original, but it still makes for very entertaining viewing. But for me, this is where the series starts to get stale..
