Ben Sachs Chicago Reader Pop singer Lady Gaga is quite good as the wife... she subtly and convincingly manages the character's transformation from vulnerable ingenue to self-confident celebrity. Elyse M well done, believable characters, but for me, it was just a little flat. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/25/24 Full Review Stef One of the best movies and soundtracks of all time. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/01/24 Full Review iris It was actually 'A Star Is Born' (1976) with Barbra Streisand & Krist Krisrofferson. This was the best version. Way better than the 2018 Lady Gaga. I LOVE Barbra Streusand. Music was wonderful. Acting wonderful. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/23/24 Full Review Audience Member Hmm. Well, impressed Bradley also directed. He did his best at channeling Kris from the 70's version. This was as good as the last one. Gaga is a Really Good actress. Her turn in House of Gucci was also awesome. It wasn't a real cohesive story it just kind of came together in bits and pieces but it was enjoyable and I'm going to keep for the collection. Oh, and AWESOME to see Dice in a movie. Ya know, before he became one of the best comedians of the 90's he actually was an actor, and a pretty good one. Still Love Ford Fairlane. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/20/25 Full Review Tom R Great movie. Let me point out two things I loved the most. The first 45 minutes of the film from start to the ending of the "Shallow" on stage with Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga is utterly brilliant in all aspects from the character development, acting, story line and then the duet with Cooper and Lady Gaga on stage where she is reluctant to join Jackson Mane to her grabbing the mike with a powerful Lady Gaga performance making her character become the star. Now go back and watch the first 45 minutes and listen to the music bed underneath the acting when Alley finally tells her boss to shove it. That music bed following Alley leave where she works, getting in the limo, getting on the plane, coming to the stage is actually the full musical intro of the song that Jackson Mane is playing on stage. Brilliant idea. And lastly, the brilliant ending with a song by Alley at the end of the movie with a cutaway to Jackson Mane and Alley at the piano with a final turn to Alley. Just brilliant decisions by Bradley Cooper as the Director of the film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/16/25 Full Review Jay W OK, Hollywood, please stop making remakes of this film. I know all four of these films have been critical darlings. All four have gotten Oscar nominations, in total 26 nominations and 4 wins. I can see its charm. It speaks about what the Academy loves, themselves. The movies are all about show business. A lot of the films, this one included, have great songs and musical numbers. The stories follow one rising star and one that is fading away and the two of them are in love with each other. It’s not without its merits. But I am sick of this story. Its ending perpetuates a problematic theme that is all too prevalent. The songs and acting are all good, but the story, particularly the ending, is a deal breaker.
