Katie (Diane Baker) and Johnny Nolan (Cliff Robertson) live in a poor section of Brooklyn with their two children, Francie (Pamelyn Ferdin) and Neely (Michael James Wixted). Katie's a strong-willed housewife, and Johnny is a waiter who's often drunk and out of work.
