Owen Gleiberman Variety "A Woman, a Part" knows how to hold an audience, and it's got a fresh, if commercially limited, subject: What happens when hipsters get old. Mar 28, 2017 Full Review Kristen Yoonsoo Kim Village Voice Siff gives a modest but poignant performance that rings true for women of a certain age and career. Mar 22, 2017 Full Review Glenn Kenny RogerEbert.com A Woman, a Part mixes passion and ambivalence to create a work with ambiguities that seem earned, and lived in. Rated: 3/4 Mar 22, 2017 Full Review Mat Bradley-Tschirgi Battleship Pretension As far as directorial debuts go, A Woman, a Part is middling. We've all seen this story about an actress' life on the skids before. I'm sure Subrin has a great film in her; she's just not there yet. Dec 8, 2020 Full Review Stephen Saito Moveable Fest The way Subrin's mosaic-like structuring comes together is quite rewarding, carefully calibrated in its haunting musical choices and nuanced performances. Nov 1, 2018 Full Review Gerald Peary Arts Fuse Credit director Subrin for being resourceful in incorporating her cast's real-life situations into her storytelling. Audience Member Overall I liked the film, It's a slow paced deep thought movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member An intense character study, as well as an examination on the fallacy of success, A Woman, A Part is certain to go down as one of the year's most accomplished debut features. Writer/director Elizabeth Subrin captures her film with a sense of intimacy and distress that is seldom seen in American cinema, and its astonishing to see how much it resembles John Cassavetes (perhaps the title is even a nod to A Woman Under the Influence). It's an often rough film that looks at a damaged set of characters, but it avoids being overtly grim by having sparkles of humor, and even a deceptive tone that's ultimately optimistic. Maggie Siff (perhaps best known for her TV roles on Sons of Anarchy and Mad Men) gives a towering performance here as an actress torn between her career and her morals, and one must think how much of her own experience is placated in the film. Nicely paced and wisely budgeted, A Woman, A Part is a strong picture all around, and one that establishes Elisabeth Subrin as a talent to acknowledge.
