Critics Consensus

A Wrinkle in Time is visually gorgeous, big-hearted, and occasionally quite moving; unfortunately, it's also wildly ambitious to a fault, and often less than the sum of its classic parts.

Jenn Jackson Bitch Media The fantastic journey through space and time was as engaging visually as it was narratively. Mar 5, 2021 Full Review Caryn James BBC.com The film's themes of love, family and self-acceptance are powerful enough to resonate with audiences. But the concept and casting shouldn't be the most magical parts of a fantasy film, no matter how enchanting its message is. Rated: 3/5 Apr 26, 2018 Full Review Ryan Gilbey New Statesman What DuVernay has delivered is essentially a feature-length screensaver which operates on the assumption that cinema for children is a matter of bright colours and dippy sentiment. Mar 29, 2018 Full Review Caroline Cao Vague Visages A Wrinkle in Time is for kids, and I mean 'made for kids' in the supportive definition rather than the usual lazy and disparaging connotation that's carelessly applied to more lukewarm family films. Dec 14, 2023 Full Review Brian T. Carney Washington Blade The visually impressive adventure saga gets bogged down in corny dialogue. Dec 8, 2022 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson This colossal springboard from the family film of teen issues to the epic intergalactic adventure "A Wrinkle in Time" desires to be is more than a little haphazard. Thomas R Never read the book before. Should’ve read the book instead of watching this Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/03/24 Full Review Sdogman1 S Complete rubbish, just go read the book. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/11/24 Full Review Pranada M I couldn't finish it. While it might be sort of, kind of, interesting as a film in its own right, it's just such a cheap sendup of the book. There was real spiritual substance in Madeleine L'Engle's books. This is well-meaning fluff that's poorly plotted, poorly scripted, and takes far too many liberties with the book to deserve the title. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/08/24 Full Review Dale R A young girl named Meg travels through the universe in search of her father. Based on a novel by Madeleine L’Engle that I have not yet read. Storm Reid plays the lead and I wasn’t wowed by her performance, but I think she did a good job. Chris Pine and Reese Witherspoon both make good use of the limited screen time they have. There were many moments of “hey look at this CGI sequence that we bought” in this film that slowed the pacing down and took away potential character moments that this film needed more of. I was very confused by the motivation, or plan, of the villain. Through the movie I was rooting for the lead, but had no doubt she would succeed. Skip this film. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/07/24 Full Review Daniel C I cannot understand why Disney is compelled to take amazing and wonderful classical stories and demolish them with horrible acting, atrocious dialogue, and incomprehensible plot lines. One has to accept that transitioning from the written word to cinema means aspects of the original must be changed. I can barely recognize the story Disney presents and the cherished story I read in my youth. The only thing Disney left intact was the title. The plot cannot be followed. The actor's betrayal of the wonderful characters are boring and unconvincing in any manner. I have heard more interesting dialogue at a Taco Bell on a Friday night than this film- and been more rewarded for my time also. I cannot even see anything redeemable for any experience with the cinematic wreckage. Just sad.
