Richard Kuipers Variety From around the halfway point... a hollowness creeps in, with each new plot development promising insight and discovery but delivering little more than visual stimulation. Feb 12, 2021 Full Review Alex Saveliev Film Threat Yang seems to have embarked on his own writer’s odyssey, going for broke, with a substantial studio budget to help visualize his dreams. Rated: 6/10 Mar 28, 2022 Full Review Kevin Carr Fat Guys at the Movies It isn't perfect, but it's still an interesting movie. Rated: 2.5/4 Mar 12, 2022 Full Review Andrew Benjamin Battleship Pretension Kongwen has clear motivations that we see and can relate to. His is a classic hero vs villain story that is fun to watch. It's also visually just more exciting to watch. Mar 16, 2021 Full Review Sean Gilman The Chinese Cinema A solid action movie (with) an ingenious set-up rife with allegorical potential and the kind of sneaky politics one hopes to find as a sign of life in a mass-market product. Mar 3, 2021 Full Review Hasitha Fernando Flickering Myth A Writer's Odyssey has its faults, but don't let that deter you from seeing this emotionally engaging, visually ambitious epic. It's one hell of a wild ride, that's unlike anything you've seen before. Mar 1, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Avindu G Writer's odyssey fails to take shape with a definite theme due to the excessive details that are packed into the two hours span. Two parallel stories are stiched together with force yet neither of them produce a proper story. Visuals are magical yet wasted on the confusing nature of the stories. Plot is understandable but the delivery is blunt. It's light hearted and proves that any idea when supplemented with right amount of technology could makeup to a good story. Performances doesn't look to be natural rather seemed as a struggle with the ever changing directions. Audio effects were fine but a bit too excessive. It's a fun watch but confusing. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/22/23 Full Review Jet L It‘s so emotional and fresh. Totally different from Hollywood made action movies. This is something original and oriental flavor. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/07/23 Full Review Late R There are essentially two separate stories: one that takes place in the real world and deals with a heavy, dark subject; and a second one that takes place in a fantasy world, adopting a simpler good-vs-evil format full of CGI battles and big visuals. It's this bizarre mix that is simultaneously its greatest strength and weakness as the latter tends to detract from and lessen the impact of the former, but also provides a respite from the heaviness of it and adds a layer that, although I'm not sure makes for a better film, is still pretty fun, enjoyable, and certainly interesting. Jiayin Lei delivers a committed central performance that elevates everything and helps to ground events, always conveying a sense of seriousness even when appearances stray into the slightly silly zone. ‘A Writer's Odyssey' is certainly different which is an achievement in and of itself, but especially when it actually kinda works. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/16/22 Full Review Gianmarco R Very special film that alternates a strange real life with a wonderful fantasy world. The plot is well thought out even if in some places the film is slightly rushed and has small holes. In general the film is very entertaining and without dead spots and it alternates well the phases in the real world and those in the fantasy world Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/01/22 Full Review simon j Effects and conceptual art are great, but the storyline is confusing and too infantile. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member very nice visuals and I liked the simple story myself Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Read all reviews
