Randy Cordova Arizona Republic "Above and Beyond" is a straightforward, rah-rah documentary that shines a light on a group of World War II pilots who were recruited to essentially create the Israeli air force during the Palestine War in 1948. Rated: 3.5/5 Mar 12, 2015 Full Review Sheri Linden Los Angeles Times Though naggingly simplistic in its historical scope, the film offers a fascinating chronicle of the 1948 Arab-Israeli war through the eyes of a daring group of men. Feb 5, 2015 Full Review Ronnie Scheib Variety The film veers toward oversimplified selectivity, too intent on its feel-good, back-patting agenda. Jan 31, 2015 Full Review Danielle Solzman Solzy at the Movies Above and Beyond makes for a solid documentary that would almost certainly be a thriller if told as a narrative because the film shows how a number of Jewish pilots came together in a classic David vs. Goliath tale. Rated: 4/5 Nov 3, 2023 Full Review Joe Bendel Epoch Times This is a flat-out terrific film that is not ashamed to celebrate heroism and derring-do attitude. Rated: 4/5 May 27, 2016 Full Review Nora Lee Mandel Maven's Nest Nimbly combines salty old dog storytellers regaling the swashbuckling derring-do of their youth with ILM's whiz bang special effects for a thrilling documentary ride. Audience Member Brilliant, fascinating, illuminating work. Historically educating for anyone who wishes to know more about Israel. Also casts a light on post WW2 antisemitism. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Another typical Western propaganda flick attempting to demonize Arabs and prop Israelis as saintly victims. How surprising. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member An outstanding documentary which is also beautifully made. I loved the way surviving volunteers told their stories while interwoven with historical and archival footage. The whole event was brought to life in an immediate and palpable way, beautifully illustrated, very suspenseful and profoundly moving. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member True Heroes who were key to Israel surviving the battles and war of 1948. And, an excellent documentary. Excellent. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member True story with lots of courage Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Learned some good history. It was interesting that we pat ourselves on the back so hard for "stopping the Holocaust," and yet "left them out there flappin" when they were defending themselves?
