Critics Consensus

It's undeniably reverent of the real-life heroes in its cast, but Act of Valor lets them down with a clichéd script, stilted acting, and a jingoistic attitude that ignores the complexities of war.

Tara Brady Irish Times I guess they had to be realistic in order to make up for the dialogue, the acting, the special effects, the mawkishness, the closeted homoeroticism, the jingoism... Rated: 1/5 Apr 1, 2012 Full Review Peter Bradshaw Guardian In the 1980s, Top Gun reportedly sent young men rushing to join the military; this hilariously bad film is going to get them clamouring to join the Jon Stewart Appreciation Society. Rated: 1/5 Mar 22, 2012 Full Review Tim Robey Daily Telegraph (UK) The film is almost unashamedly a recruitment video for future Seals, but let's hope possession of a PlayStation 3 doesn't become the sole condition for enrolling. Rated: 2.5/5 Aug 19, 2022 Full Review Howard Gorman NME (New Musical Express) Shadowing real-life SEALs as they re-enact some of the most stunning combat sequences ever put to film, this is the closest a film has ever got to emulating a Call of Duty game. Claudio C Act of Valor (2012) Breathtaking Action Scenes (11,855 – 26 Jul 2025 – by Claudio Carvalho) The Chechen terrorist Abu Shabal (Jason Cottle) kills the US Ambassador in Manila, his son and several children in an international school with a bomb planted in an ice cream truck and flees to Indonesia. Meanwhile, CIA agent Walter Ross (Nestor Serrano) is murdered and his partner Lisa Morales (Roselyn Sanchez) kidnapped and tortured by the men of the drug smuggler Mikhail "Christo" Troykovich (Alex Veadov). In California, a SEAL team is on vacation with their families and Lt. Roarke (Rorke Denver) and Chief Dave (Dave) are best friends. Roarke tells Dave that his wife is pregnant, and he wants to be with her in delivery. But soon their team is assigned to travel to Costa Rica to rescue Lisa Morales. They succeed and when the Intelligence acknowledge the information in her cell phone, they learn that Christ and Shabal are childhood friends and Shabal is plotting several terrorist attacks in the United States with a dangerous vest. Now they need to hunt down Shabal around the world. “Act of Valor” (2012) is an American movie directed by Mike McCoy and Scott Waugh with breathtaking action scenes. However, the screenplay is not good, and the acting is terrible in general. Roselyn Sanchez, Alex Veadov and Jason Cottle are exceptions and is hard for a foreigner to understand the speaking of most soldiers that seem to be reading the lines. Anyway, it is an enjoyable storyline. My vote is seven. Title (Brazil): “Ato de Coragem” (“Act of courage”) My Blog: https://maniacosporfilme.wordpress.com/ Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/27/25 Full Review dave e Had this been a true story to the tee, it would probably get a higher critic rating. However, I enjoyed the combat scenes as they were shot very well along with great sound. They used grenades much more than soldiers do in real life, but I always scream at the screen throw a grenade damn it! Good marine film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/11/25 Full Review Manpreet M The movie is awesome, critics who say this movie is bad don't understand this genre and is probably why bad movies win Oscars. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/16/25 Full Review Audience Member The movie was entertaining with terrific fights scenes. The acting in many parts was not credible. This had the making of a great movie. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/11/25 Full Review Balla S I have to agree that the acting is not the best I've ever seen, but the action is second to none. I'm definitely with the 72% that really enjoyed it - don't listen to the 28% here because they've obviously got something wrong with them!! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/18/25 Full Review Paul D Critics are the kind of people who sit on the sidelines and make snide comments about fellow citizens who are willing to go to horrible places and do terrible things to despicable villains to protect their effeminate scrawny butts. The times, they are a-changin’. Heroism is back. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/08/25 Full Review Read all reviews
